What should have been the show\u2019s most prosperous new beginning\u2014its partnering with streaming giant Disney+ and showrunner\u2019s Russell T Davies\u2019 starry-eyed goal of turning the 60-year-old series into a \u201cWHOniverse\u201d of its own, with spinoffs galore\u2014has ended with a Doctor departure earlier than expected and a single spinoff with no global release date. Conjecture as we may, no one can fully say <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nerdist.com\/article\/doctor-who-not-returning-to-disney-plus-2026-christmas-special-on-bbc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:why the partnership between Disney, BBC Studios, and the BBC proper fizzled unceremoniously;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">why the partnership between Disney, BBC Studios, and the BBC proper fizzled unceremoniously<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That hasn\u2019t stopped outlets, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/10\/why-disney-ditched-doctor-bbc-1236601181\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:most recently Deadline;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">most recently <em>Deadline<\/em><\/a>, from attempting to shed light on the subject. In the lengthy piece, the trade has quotes from anonymous insiders at both BBC and Disney+ as well as bloggers who offer speculation. Ultimately, what seems clear is that the writing was on the wall for a while that Disney wasn\u2019t going to reup their partnership to produce more <em>Doctor Who<\/em> following the initial 26-episode agreement. <em>Deadline<\/em> offers a few different whys, which I\u2019ll talk about now. In fairness, this iteration of the show did have a Black, queer full-time Doctor, major characters who were trans, onscreen gay kissing, a drag performer playing a villain, and stories with zero onscreen white people. The insider claims all of this was \u201ctoo woke for Trump\u2019s USA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While tempting to tip the blame this way, I really doubt this was entirely the reason. Disney is risk-averse, as we know, and may be willing (at least in the short term) to attempt to appease conservative backlash. However, did that many people even notice or care that <em>Doctor Who<\/em> was doing these things? In the UK, the BBC got some complaints, but that\u2019s because it\u2019s the country\u2019s main broadcast network. We probably won\u2019t know the true story for a very long time. While every indication seemed to be Gatwa would return for at least a third series, that ended up not happening. The 33-year-old actor said in an interview that he was \u201cgetting old and my body was tired.\u201d That\u2019s as may be. (Call me when you\u2019re 41 and have high blood pressure and bad knees, dude.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>Deadline<\/em> said, according to another unnamed insider the show suffered because Gatwa never fully embraced the role. \u201cThere is more to that role than performing,\u201d this person says. \u201cYou have got to be an ambassador for the brand and embrace being that generation\u2019s Doctor. Matt Smith and David Tennant fully understood the responsibility it carried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I think this is pretty hogwashy as well. Maybe Gatwa didn\u2019t embrace the role as much as others, maybe he did just treat it as another job, but that again would not be enough to make Disney want to discontinue the show. And would his leaving have been a hindrance to the brokering of a new deal? Honestly, same with the \u201cwoke\u201d stuff I talked about above. Why did they suspend Jimmy Kimmel? They were worried about ratings going down. Why did they un-suspend him so quickly? Because they lost more subscribers than they would have lost market ratings. It\u2019s all cost-benefit. The fact of the matter is, as much as those of us who love <em>Doctor Who<\/em> love it, the show has never had the kind of crossover appeal of something like <em>Star Wars<\/em> or Marvel. Even at the very height of its U.S. popularity circa 2012 and 2013, <em>Doctor Who<\/em>\u2018s actual audience share on BBC America was much lower than any other \u201cbig hit\u201d on cable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">None of the above issues would have mattered a tinker\u2019s cuss had the show been a runaway smash hit. The piece cites \u201cthis year\u2019s season failed to register in Nielsen and Luminate\u2019s streaming charts.\u201d It was even lower than the \u201cflop\u201d that was the 2024 season. The lackluster two-part finale in an otherwise quite solid inaugural season likely soured casual viewers on returning for the next season. Disney also didn\u2019t seem to give the series nearly the same marketing push for \u201cseason two\u201d as it did for \u201cseason one.\u201d All of that results in bad viewing figures.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><strong>Most Likely Reason \u2013 High Budget, Low Return<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When it comes right down to it, Disney needed more than just good vibes to want to keep spending loads of money on <em>Doctor Who<\/em>. The series had a higher budget with Disney money than it ever had on BBC alone, but that clearly didn\u2019t draw in too many new viewers. <em>Doctor Who<\/em> has a fervent and loyal fanbase, but it\u2019s not on a par with the biggest franchises. It was hailed at the time as an \u201cunprecedented\u201d pact bringing together \u201ctwo giants of entertainment,\u201d but the ex-Disney insider says they soon detected regret at spending so much on\u00a0<em>Doctor Who<\/em>. The show\u2019s budget was between \u00a36M ($8.5M) and \u00a38M per episode, we understand, putting the value of the deal at as much as \u00a3168M.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That\u2019s the long and short of it right there. Bob Chapek spent way too much money on streaming and when Bob Iger took back over, he began cutting down TV projects for Disney+. Disney at one point saw <em>Doctor Who<\/em> as an asset for its streaming \u201ccontent\u201d portfolio. Not long after they struck the deal, the Mouse House only saw the bleeding bank statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Obviously, many factors go into the production of a TV series. But if Disney wasn\u2019t getting what it needed out of the deal monetarily or Emmy nomination-wise, it would have been unlikely to sign a new deal. And if, as many have speculated, there had been any behind-the-scenes turmoil, it makes sense for Disney to cut bait on the TARDIS crew.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><strong>What\u2019s Next for <em>Doctor Who<\/em>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">We know two things as of right now. One, the spinoff <em>The War Between the Land and the Sea<\/em> will air on BBC in December. We don\u2019t know when it will air on Disney+ to mark the official end of the requirements on Disney\u2019s end\u2014some time in 2026. Two, we know the BBC has commissioned a 2026 Christmas episode to presumably tie up the loose end of Billie Piper as the Rose Doctor Tyler Bad Wolf Moment or whatever. The promise of library content and new episodes might be enough. It\u2019s also not like Skydance doesn\u2019t love spending money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Disney+ era for <em>Doctor Who<\/em> was fraught almost from start to finish, so when the show inevitably regenerates yet again, fans can only hope for some stability in space and time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>Kyle Anderson is the Senior Editor for Nerdist.
