Charlie Sheen<\/strong><\/a> had an emotional reaction upon learning that Tom Cruise<\/strong><\/a> had beaten him out for the lead role in 1989\u2019s Born on the Fourth of July.<\/p>\n \u201cThe thing that is weird is [director Oliver Stone<\/strong>] said, \u2018I want you to do Born on the Fourth.\u2019 We had meetings about it and we had a dinner with Ron Kovic<\/strong>,\u201d Sheen, 60, said in an interview with Graham Bensinger<\/strong> uploaded via YouTube<\/a> on Wednesday, October 29. \u201cAnd then I stopped hearing from him. We stopped talking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n Born on the Fourth of July is an anti-war movie based on Kovic\u2019s autobiography of the same name. The 1989 film details Kovic\u2019s childhood, military service and paralysis during the Vietnam War. Following the war, Kovic became an anti-war activist.<\/p>\n Sheen shared that he reached out to Stone to check in but was told he was in Cuba. Sheen asked Stone’s team to have him call back when he was available. He says, \u2018Hey, man. You sitting down?\u2019 And I think somebody died, right?\u201d Sheen recalled. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018No, what\u2019s going on?\u2019 He says, \u2018Cruise is doing Born on the Fourth.’\u201d<\/p>\n The actor continued, \u201cI love that Emilio thought that I needed to be seated to get news he thought was going to make me faint. I mean, what are we doing here? It\u2019s a movie.\u201d<\/p>\n While Sheen and Cruise were friends at the time, the Two and a Half Men alum confessed that losing the project was \u201ca big deal\u201d to him.<\/p>\n Universal\/courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt was also the betrayal factor of it,\u201d Sheen said. \u201cSo, I was like, \u2018OK, alright.\u2019 You know, Oliver\u2019s been a fan of Tom\u2019s for a long time. It\u2019s a different movie if Tom does it than if I do it. I was like, \u2018What are you going to do?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Sheen acknowledged that you \u201ccan\u2019t lose something you never had\u201d since he \u201cdidn\u2019t sign a contract.\u201d<\/p>\n After learning the news, Sheen ran into Stone at a bar and decided to bring up losing the role.<\/p>\n \u201cI was drunk enough and he was drunk enough for that thing to finally be brought up,\u201d he recalled. \u201cAnd he was like, \u2018I just felt like you didn\u2019t have any passion for it. I felt like you lost interest.\u2019 I was like, \u2018Well, I didn\u2019t see you. How do you know how much passion I lost or interest that evaporated if we never talked about it again?’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/span><\/div>\n
