When you hear a story about alcohol, the \u201890s, <\/span>Nickelodeon<\/span><\/a> and a child, you typically hold your breath and wait to learn something that\u2019s a nauseating mixture of tragic and <\/span>infuriating<\/span><\/a>. But fortunately for every 75 horrifying stories you hear about a child actor\u2019s experience, there\u2019s one where the adults involved were at least a little bit decent. <\/span><\/p>\n In a new interview with Tori Spelling on her podcast, <\/span>misSPELLING<\/i><\/span><\/a>, Melissa Joan Hart told guest host and fellow \u201890s star Elisa Donovan about a time when she was actually spared from underage drinking. As first reported by <\/span>People<\/i><\/span><\/a>, Hart shared that on the set of Clarissa Explains It All <\/i>in the early \u201890s, she encountered a crew that protected her, as opposed to taking advantage of her young age and childhood crushes. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt was a lot of guys, and they were a little bit older than me,\u201d Hart explained. \u201cThey were all in like their early 20s. And so, I had crushes on all of them, but they took good care of me.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n When she wanted to drink a beer on set, everyone said no, rather than plying a kid with alcohol. Seems like the obvious, decent thing to do, but if you\u2019ve ever seen Quiet on Set<\/i> or listened to stories about Drew Barrymore\u2019s childhood, you\u2019d realize that decency toward children in entertainment was in short supply back then. (Probably now too, but we\u2019re at least a decade out from those documentaries.)<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhen that whole Nickelodeon thing came out recently, this is gonna be a little, not salacious, but when that Nickelodeon thing came out recently about the kind of horrors that happened on some shows at Nickelodeon, that wasn\u2019t my experience,\u201d Hart explained. \u201cBecause I was protected by my crew \u2014 my guys. And I have pictures where, they\u2019re all having drinks around me, and I\u2019m like in a bathing suit because I\u2019ve been rolling around in the sprinklers at an apartment complex and they\u2019re all drinking beers or whatever. But I\u2019d be like, \u2018I want a beer. I want a beer. I want a beer.\u2019 And at this point, I\u2019m like 16, 17. They\u2019d be like, \u2018No. We\u2019re not giving you a beer, because we\u2019ll get fired tomorrow.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Again, this story should be the standard. But it\u2019s actually exceptional, and both women on the podcast were aware of that. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThank God for them not letting me because I didn\u2019t really wanna drink,\u201d Hart continued. \u201cI just wanted to hang with the cool guys. I was like, \u2018I just wanna hold it. Can I just hold it? Like, it\u2019s disgusting, but I just wanna hold the beer because I feel cool because I wanna hang with you guys.\u2019 But they were like, \u2018No, we don\u2019t wanna get fired. Stop it.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
