The anchors of NBC’s “Today” got into the Halloween spirit in a big way Oct. 31, with a themed episode that included a nod to New Jersey’s legendary music scene.<\/p>\n
The elaborate skit in the show<\/a> centered on a road trip taken by four of the show’s co-hosts: Carson Daly, Savannah Guthrie, Craig Melvin and Jenna Bush Hager. The group traveled across the United States to highlight a variety of famous figures, both real and fictional, portrayed by the quartet and other “Today” personalities.<\/p>\n Leaving from the show’s New York City headquarters, neighboring New Jersey was the logical first stop on the tour. Daly noted the Garden State’s place in music history as the home to music icons like Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi.<\/p>\n “You cannot forget the ultimate Jersey boy: Frankie Valli,” Melvin chimed in. He cited the singer’s role as lead vocalist of the Four Seasons, the group that inspired the award-winning Broadway musical “Jersey Boys.”<\/p>\n The camera then cut to a live shot of “Today” anchor Dylan Dreyer, dressed as Valli, performing a rendition of the Four Seasons’ “Walk Like a Man” alongside three other stand-ins for the band members.<\/p>\n Dreyer’s costume design earned rave reviews from numerous commenters on the show’s Instagram page<\/a>, though her sons were slightly less enthused.<\/p>\n “You don’t look like yourself,” one of the boys told Dreyer via FaceTime<\/a> as she sat in the makeup chair, while another added, “Yeah, you look like a boy.” Dreyer remarked that the children seemed scared of her, incorporating an unintended element of traditional Halloween horror into the costume.<\/p>\n Other locations featured in the episode included Philadelphia, where Daly dressed as boxer Rocky Balboa and Al Roker portrayed rival Clubber Lang; Las Vegas, with Willie Geist as singer Wayne Newton; and Minnesota, with Melvin as legendary musician Prince.
