In my case, it was \u201cchild who gets to stay home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I don\u2019t know when I became a Spooky Season Scrooge, but it\u2019s a curmudgeonly instinct that has burrowed deep into my personality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Halloween is a day for my nephews and all of my friends\u2019 kids to look cute in their costumes, me to like the Instagram photos of them being adorable, and possibly tolerate a dog dressed as a bumble bee. The *gestures wildly like he\u2019s landing an airplane* hoopla that has surrounded adult Halloween? We are better than those terrible horror and slasher movies that your friend said it would be \u201cfun\u201d to watch in honor of the holiday. No sitcom has done a good Halloween episode since <i>Roseanne<\/i>, which is now icky to be a fan of. (OK, <i>Modern Family<\/i> had one good one.) I\u2019m gay, so obviously I love <i>Hocus Pocus<\/i>. But also, enough with <i>Hocus Pocus<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">So, if you will indulge me on this Halloween weekend during which I will be drawing the curtains, pouring a pint glass of white wine, and pretending that people aren\u2019t running amok outside my apartment, I\u2019ve curated a list of great things airing and streaming right now that I think you should watch and have nothing to do with ghosts and witches and serial killers. Just good stuff that deserves attention instead of that s&#8211;tty horror movie you were going to put on out of some spooky obligation. Think of it as the Halloween Hater\u2019s Guide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><i><b>Jurassic World Rebirth<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I want you to still have fun on Halloween weekend, so watch this latest Jurassic Universe sequel, which is utterly ludicrous\u2014yet still a blast. On Peacock this weekend, this movie leans full-tilt into the goofiness of the franchise, and it is so enjoyable because of it. Watch <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/sorry-baby-going-best-movie-155604747.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sorry, Baby;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><i>Sorry, Baby<\/i><\/a>, the Sundance smash that is now available on HBO Max. If that\u2019s a description that inspires rage, you should watch this show, which premieres on HBO on Sunday. Obviously, there is no resisting Emma Thompson as a boorish, foul-mouthed, and cynical detective. It\u2019s almost like Thompson knew so many of us are despondent in current times, and needed her to play a part like this to cheer us up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><i><b>Wife Swap: Housewives Edition<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">My voice is hoarse from singing the praises of the current seasons of Real Housewives that are airing. So instead, let me point you towards this nostalgic remix. I don\u2019t know why, as a high school boy, I was obsessed with the reality series <i>Wife Swap<\/i>, but it is for some reason a touchstone in my pop culture history. So the fact that they\u2019ve revived it with fan-favorite Real Housewives trading lives with ordinary women? Masterful television. (I cried during the premiere.) You can watch it on Peacock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><i><b>Dancing With the Stars<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I have been validated in my suspicion that it is cool again to love <i>Dancing With the Stars<\/i>, this season of which I\u2019ve been borderline obsessed with. Citing empirical data and ratings numbers, Vulture just decreed that \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/dancing-with-the-stars-ratings-2025-season.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Hottest Show on TV is 20 Years Old;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">The Hottest Show on TV is 20 Years Old<\/a>.\u201d Going to smugly cha-cha-cha away now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><i><b>Hedda<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I watched <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/movies\/articles\/tessa-thompson-storms-oscar-race-145431310.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:Hedda;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><i>Hedda<\/i><\/a> at the Virginia Film Festival and, given how visually arresting and sumptuous it is, was so happy to interview its production designer, Cara Brower, after the screening. It is such a taut, pulse-pounding take on the Ibsen play, powerfully steered by Tessa Thompson and Nina Hoss in the leads. And, my god, it\u2019s so gorgeous to look at. That said, even with all its messiness, I\u2019d kill for a romance like the one Joanne (Kristen Bell) and Noah (Adam Brody) have, where differences in what they want and need from each other serve as both thorns in their side and a reason to communicate even more deeply and intimately. Plus, it\u2019s funny.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><i><b>Sinners<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Basically any occasion you have to watch <i>Sinners<\/i>, one of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/even-understand-big-deal-sinners-173150682.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:coolest and best movies;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">coolest and best movies<\/a> of the year, you should. It\u2019s on HBO Max, and (sigh) I guess it\u2019s vaguely Halloween-y, what with vampires and whatever. You\u2019re welcome.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><b>Of All Things to Regret\u2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Jennifer Lawrence is the most refreshing celebrity we have. She\u2019s an A-lister who, at the very least, doesn\u2019t project that she\u2019s obsessed with her image and how she comes across.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She\u2019s self-effacing and self-deprecating, and as such, is hilarious and relatable. I get why seeing that person everywhere would be annoying,&#8221; Lawrence told The New Yorker. \u201cI felt\u2014I didn\u2019t feel, I was, I think\u2014rejected not for my movies, not for my politics, but for me, for my personality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Celebrities today are <i>soooooo boring<\/i>. If I had an unlimited character count, I would tack on about 450 more o\u2019s to that <i>soooooo<\/i>. When Jennifer Lawrence would give an interview, it was like getting a jolt from a defibrillator after lifelining from industry boredom. I hate that she felt rejected for it, or regrets it. And I think I\u2019m not alone:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><b>The Only Halloween Costume I\u2019ll Tolerate<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I will never forget when I first learned the legend of Poot Lovato.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">An unflattering photograph was once taken of Demi Lovato, which inspired <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/knowyourmeme.com\/memes\/poot-lovato\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the lore of Poot;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the lore of Poot<\/a>. That photo, according to the meme, was an unveiling: \u201cDemi\u2019s twin sister. She was locked in a basement her whole life. This picture was taken the first time she went outside. Her name is Poot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I truly don\u2019t know what it was about the whole thing\u2014the photo, the silliness of how serious the myth was\u2014but, at my desk at the Daily Beast office, I laughed so hard that I lost my breath, started wheezing, and began crying. Multiple people came to check on me. The episode, which was a crossover with <i>Below Deck Down Under<\/i>, took place on a yacht, featured one of the most epic dinner scenes in Housewives history, and ended with this gorgeous, cinematic shot:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I would make that common joke of \u201chang it in the Louvre,\u201d but we all <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/secret-weakness-enabled-louvre-thieves-235742200.html\" rel=\"\" data-ylk=\"slk:now know what happens;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">now know what happens<\/a> with treasures that are housed there.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\"><b>My Husband Is Back<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s been a while since I\u2019ve raved about my husband, Jonathan Bailey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He was honored at the TIME 100 Next Gala, and gave a speech talking about how we are technically more connected than ever, but also more isolated by technology. So he encouraged us to commune again, with people we love, to feel the joy of togetherness: \u201cHere\u2019s to house parties. Here\u2019s to cinemas. Here\u2019s to watching TV with friends. Here\u2019s to listening parties. To inviting people around to chat. Here\u2019s to sl-t dropping in packs. To meeting in parks. To experiencing life together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I would break a knee and\/or a hip if I attempted a sl-t drop, but I was really touched by the sentiment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I don\u2019t allow myself to feel proud of many things in life, but I am immensely proud of the friends I have surrounded myself with and how long and deep those relationships are. It\u2019s nice to have a reminder to take those friendships out of the group chat and into real life, because it is joyous and rejuvenating.
