Puscifer have released the second single “Pendulum,” from their upcoming album Normal Isn’t<\/em><\/a>. True to their word, the new track finds the band “leaning into [their] early influences” with a decidedly 80’s electro\/New Wave feel. For much of the track, distorted guitars take a backseat to wobbling synths and crisp drum machine patterns. <\/p>\n

The director’s cut of the music video, featuring Maynard James “MJ” Keenan interviewing his alter-ego(?) Bellendia Black, sheds some light on the new album’s themes. In Black’s own words:<\/p>\n

“It’s a collection of insights we were compelled to share. All borne out of despair. Desperation. Distress. Despondency. Dejection. Gloom and anguish. And yet, a glimmer of hope in all this hopelessness.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Ironically, the premise of the interview might be the most illuminating part of all. Strained anti-comedy aside, it’s fascinating to see the two sides of Keenan laid bare: too kool for skool on the one side, painfully earnest on the other. Half-hearted humor fighting sincerity and sentimentality. Cynicism revealing wounded optimism. And that’s before even getting to the music.<\/p>\n
