To celebrate the 50th anniversary of \u201cBohemian Rhapsody,\u201d Queen<\/strong><\/a> has released a special, five-part new installment of their series The Greatest exploring the musical evolution that led to one of their most iconic songs.<\/p>\n The first episode, \u201cThe Path to Bohemian Rhapsody,\u201d premieres today, October 31, on Queen\u2019s official YouTube channel. The series joins past episodes of Brian May and Roger Taylor\u2019s series covering their origins, their famous Live Aid show and more\u2014like other installments in the series, it features exclusive interviews with May and Taylor.<\/p>\n While \u201cBohemian Rhapsody\u201d shocked the music industry with its creative and technical complexity, as May and Taylor tell it, the song represented a natural progression rather than a radical departure. \u201cIt didn\u2019t feel that way from the inside,\u201d May explained. \u201cYou\u2019ve only got to look at the first album, with \u2018My Fairy King\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n May identifies \u201cMy Fairy King,\u201d a track off Queen\u2019s 1973 debut, as an early indicator of the direction Freddie Mercury\u2019s songwriting would take\u2014piano-based with complex mood changes and fantasy-minded lyrics. Taylor also points to \u201cMarch of the Black Queen\u201d from 1974\u2019s Queen II<\/em> as an even more direct precursor. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot more complicated in many ways than \u2018Bohemian Rhapsody,’\u201d Taylor said, highlighting the track\u2019s numerous sections and elaborate vocal arrangements.<\/p>\n Finally, the founding guitarists cited \u201cThe Fairy Feller\u2019s Masterstroke,\u201d another Queen II<\/em> track featuring intricate contrapuntal elements and six-part harmonies, as an early ancestor to \u201cBohemian Rhapsody.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s incredibly complicated,\u201d Taylor noted. \u201cIt\u2019s a nice, interesting track in its eccentric over-elaboration.\u201d<\/p>\n May also mused on Mercury\u2019s unpredictable creative process, sharing: \u201cYou didn\u2019t know where Freddie was coming from. He comes in and goes \u2018there\u2019s this bit, and there\u2019s another bit we\u2019ll do, and there\u2019s the operatic section.\u2019 You either dive in, and the whole Queen machine swings into action.\u201d<\/p>\n The \u201cBohemian Rhapsody\u201d-focused series continues weekly throughout November. In addition to the commemorative series, the band will reissue the track as 7\u201d, 12\u201d and cassette single.
