At the Tokyo International Film Festival\u2019s TIFF Lounge, two of world cinema\u2019s most distinctive voices \u2014 Cambodia\u2019s Rithy Panh<\/a> and Japan\u2019s Miyake Sho \u2014 shared the stage for a conversation about filmmaking, memory, and work. Panh, speaking in French, served as president of the Locarno Film Festival jury that awarded Miyake\u2019s \u201cTwo Seasons, Two Strangers<\/a>\u201d the Golden Leopard earlier this year. Miyake responded in Japanese.<\/p>\n

Panh said he was pleased to see Miyake again after Locarno and recalled that the jury had been unanimous. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t happen often,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t usually watch many films, but this one impressed me. It speaks about solitude and the beauty of everyday gestures. When a director places the camera where human grace appears, that\u2019s cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miyake said the film was based on stories by manga artist Yoshiharu Tsuge<\/a>, but that its real focus came from working with contemporary actors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
