On October 31st, Florence Welch<\/a> released the Florence and the Machine album, Everybody Scream<\/em>. She has since dissected lyrics in which she explicitly referenced The 1975. <\/p>\n

Chatting with Rolling Stone<\/a> <\/em>about the new project, which includes 12 tracks, including huge hit singles, \u2018Everybody Scream\u2019 and \u2018One of the Greats\u2019, Welch opened up about her lyrical investigation into the industry\u2019s inherent sexism. <\/p>\n

Specifically, on the track \u2018Music by Men\u2019, Welch sings, \u201cBreaking my bones\/Getting four out of five\/Listening to a song by the 1975\/I thought, \u2018Fuck it, I might as well give music by men a try.\u201d In reference to this song, Welch was asked which The 1975 song she was referencing. <\/p>\n

Ever the musician, Welch sang her reply: \u201cWe\u2019re fucking in a car\/Shooting heroin\/Saying controversial things.\u201d Evidently, she was talking about the track \u2018Love It If We Made It\u2019 from the album A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships.<\/em><\/p>\n

However, Welch went on to stress that the choice wasn\u2019t exactly personal. \u201cI was like, \u2018This song is really good!\u2019 A big thing with songwriting is it\u2019s often because it rhymes. So you needed a band that rhymed with five.\u201d<\/p>\n

She then went on to explain another lyric, particularly \u201cBreaking my bones\/Getting four out of five.\u201d Of that section, the singer-songwriter explained, \u201cWhen I broke my foot ontage, I got four out of five stars for that show. I was like, \u2018What more do I have to do?\u2019 I literally bled all over the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

A similar sentiment runs through the Far Out <\/em>five-star track<\/a>, \u2018One of the Greats\u2019. Speaking about her relationship to the lyrics in that single, she shared, \u201cI just found them really funny. It was this feeling of \u2018When is it going to be good enough?\u2019 I give so much, and sometimes I wonder if in that giving and in not having that almost masculine cool of holding stuff back, being obtuse, not saying it all like, \u2018What is he saying? That\u2019s so cool. What do those lyrics mean?’\u201d<\/p>\n

She went on, \u201cI was like, \u2018If I keep giving this much, does that mean people aren\u2019t taking me seriously? But then sometimes when I listen to things that have that level of masculine reserve, I\u2019m just like, \u2018Isn\u2019t this kind of boring though? What are they saying?’\u201d<\/p>\n

Famously, for their headline set at Glastonbury this year, The 1975 poked fun at their own music, including fake, gibberish lyric videos behind their performance for their old-school hit, \u2018Chocolate\u2019. <\/p>\n

Deeming her new abum the best full-length in her entire disography, Far Out <\/em>wrote<\/a>, \u201cBetween the true horror of its lead title track, to her reflections on fame in \u2018One of the Greats\u2019 and candid portraiture in \u2018Music by Men\u2019, this not only feels like a step forward for Welch in terms of her ethereal sonic universe, but also breaking down metatextural barriers across the rest of pop music.\u201d<\/p>\n
