While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, it\u2019s pretty clear when a character has been copied. Characters take inspiration from all kinds of places like\u00a0<\/span>Eric Cartman from\u00a0South Park<\/i> was inspired by Archie Bunker from\u00a0All in the Family<\/i><\/span><\/a>, something Matt Stone and Trey Parker have admitted. That said, Cartman is not an obvious Archie Bunker clone. That’s not the case, however, for these five comedic knock-offs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson<\/i> clips in 2025 mainly consist of Carson\u2019s interviews. He excelled at having funny, memorable interactions with guests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In contrast, you never see the sketch comedy elements from his\u00a0Tonight Show<\/i> because they\u2019re from a different time and age pretty poorly. One such character that was popular then but not so much now is the old lady persona Aunt Blabby, who is far from an original idea.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, it was a direct copy of Jonathan Winters\u2019 old lady character Maude Frickert right down to having the same wardrobe, same voice and same sweet-yet-snarky comedy conceit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the funniest characters from\u00a0<\/span>Looney Tunes<\/span><\/a> is the loudmouth rooster Foghorn Leghorn. Known for his garrulous insults, cutthroat asides and endless Southern colloquialisms, Foghorn Leghorn\u2019s cartoons stand as some of the funniest Looney Tunes shorts ever.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That said, the character was lifted nearly wholecloth from a radio character from\u00a0The Fred Allen Show<\/i> named Senator Claghorn, played by\u00a0The Fred Allen Show<\/i> announcer Kenny Delmar. The only real difference between the characters is that Claghorn was a senator while Leghorn was a rooster. They even had the same turns of phrase like \u201cThat\u2019s a joke, son!\u201d and beginning sentences by saying \u201cI say\u2026\u201d The similarity in the names is no coincidence either, as Foghorn Leghorn\u2019s name was an acknowledgment of its inspiration.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While they were both successful in their own right,\u00a0The Flintstones<\/i> is an exact clone of\u00a0The Honeymooners<\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fred Flintstone was a direct lift of Jackie Gleason\u2019s Ralph Kramden as an overweight, blue-collar loudmouth who loves to bowl. Wilma Flintstone also leans very hard into Audrey Meadows\u2019 Alice Kramden in her take-no-guff-from-her-husband attitude.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps the most obvious rip-off is Barney Rubble for Ed Norton as the chuckling, dim-witted best pal. Barney\u2019s voice was even closer to Art Carney\u2019s than Fred\u2019s was to Gleason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the creators of\u00a0<\/span>The Flintstones<\/i><\/span><\/a> even admitted to the theft. While Joseph Barbera always claimed the similarities were a coincidence, his partner William Hanna once said\u00a0The Honeymooners<\/i> \u201cinfluenced greatly what we did with\u00a0The Flintstones<\/i>.\u00a0The Honeymooners\u00a0<\/i>was there, and we used that as a kind of basis for the concept.\u201d Gleason even considered legal action over the matter, but decided against it, reasoning that he didn\u2019t want to be blamed for getting a beloved show kicked off the air.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hanna-Barbera also got into some legal hot water with their pink puma character Snagglepuss. Snagglepuss was lifted from Bert Lahr, who is best known for playing the Cowardly Lion in\u00a0The Wizard of Oz<\/i> but had an entire comic persona that didn\u2019t involve him wearing fur.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lahr even brought legal action when Snagglepuss endorsed Kellogg’s products. Lahr argued that the endorsements could lead the general public to thinking\u00a0he\u00a0<\/i>endorsed the products, so Hanna-Barbera was forced to adjust the commercials and state that it wasn\u2019t Lahr voicing the character.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

William Hanna and Joseph Barbera strike again with\u00a0Top Cat<\/i>, a con-artist cat based upon the voice and mannerisms of the Sgt. Bilko character from\u00a0The Phil Silvers Show<\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Voiced by Arnold Stang, Top Cat began as a direct imitation of Phil Silvers\u2019 character, but the show\u2019s sponsor forced a change, so it became\u00a0somewhat<\/i> based upon Silvers\u2019 voice. Never a great sign when\u00a0the sponsor<\/i> gives you beneficial editorial notes.<\/span><\/p>\n

It really makes one wonder if Hanna-Barbera would have been nearly as successful if they had to develop an original character.<\/span><\/p>\n
