Kauai native Kaliko Kauahi returns to the small screen Monday in the second season of NBC\u2019s \u201cSt. Denis Medical, \u201d a mockumentary sitcom about the eclectic staff at an underfunded Oregon hospital.<\/p>\n
The show, co-created by Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin, explores the dynamics of a high-stress workplace where personalities clash, friendships form and the absurdity of hospital life is laid bare. Kauahi is a member of the six-person main cast as Val, a no-nonsense nurse administrator often described by entertainment media as \u201csurly \u201d\u2014though Kauahi sees her as simply competent and grounded.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s someone who is really good at her job, \u201d Kauahi said. \u201cThe high jinks at the hospital sometimes get out of control, but Val\u2019s always gonna keep it in control, keep things moving.\u201d<\/p>\n
For the new season, Kauahi said fans of the show will see the characters step outside the hospital walls.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn Season 1, we got to know everyone a little bit. In Season 2, we really delve into each of the characters, see a little bit more of their life outside of the hospital, \u201d she said. \u201cWe get to venture out a little bit and see what they do and how they\u2019re like outside the hospital.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019ll be more high jinks, lots of fun, lots of laughs.\u201d<\/p>\n
A graduate of Kameha \u00admeha Schools Kapalama, Kauahi studied communications and recording arts at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles before pivoting to acting. Her breakout role came as Sandra Kaluiokalani on NBC\u2019s \u201cSuperstore, \u201d where she evolved from a recurring character to a series regular.<\/p>\n
Kauahi also played Principal Kwan in the Disney Channel series \u201cRaven\u2019s Home \u201d and had guest spots on the NBC sitcom \u201cAmerican Auto \u201d and the Paramount + comedy series \u201ciCarly.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cGrowing up I didn\u2019t see a lot of people that looked like me or my friends or my family on TV, and so it seemed a little far-fetched to be on this career path, \u201d Kauahi said. \u201cHopefully the visibility of having a local girl on a national television show and seeing people that look like you on there will help (local kids ) feel like it\u2019s attainable.\u201d<\/p>\n
She praised the \u201cSt. Denis Medical \u201d writers for their collaborative spirit and attention to detail.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a really great writers\u2019 room, \u201d Kauahi said. \u201cThey\u2019re very open to ideas and collaborating, but also they come with great ideas. These are all seasoned professionals who are so good at what they do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
