No one since Marie Laveau contributed as much to New Orleans\u2019 supernatural mystique than she.<\/p>\n<p>Rice, the author of the sensation 1976 novel \u201cInterview with the Vampire\u201d and 35 other enormously popular books, died in December 2021 at age 80. The COVID-19 pandemic made a large public memorial impossible at the moment, but her son <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/entertainment_life\/christopher-rice-new-orleans\/article_b0d6a20d-8ba9-42b2-9b47-888fe4cc6b25.html\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Rice<\/a> and her friend Eric Shaw Quinn made up for lost time with a theatrical extravaganza befitting the cultural icon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"2\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>The ornate, 1921 Orpheum was ideal for the event. The audience of Rice devotees blended perfectly amidst the filigree. Corsets, waist coats, spidery lace, bejeweled brooches, macabre makeup, menacing artificial fangs and eerie vampire contact lenses were the order of the night. The house seemed to be at capacity. He clutched a beloved, autographed photo that he\u2019d received from Rice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"3\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>Behany said he first discovered Rice in 2008 after the death of his father. Rice\u2019s psychological horror tale \u201cInterview with the Vampire\u201d offered him solace. \u201cIt was like she came into my world and said \u2018I know you\u2019re going through some stuff and I think I have some friends that can help you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those friends, Behany said, were Louis, Lestat, Claudia, Armand, Santiago and all the characters in all of her books to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had one influence on me after another,\u201d he said. Later, Behany said, he corresponded with Rice via email. \u201cI would not be who I am today without her,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>In that, Behany spoke for many.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-asset Hubner wore a scarlet mask evoking &#8220;Memnoch the Devil,&#8221; one of Rice&#8217;s many sinister inventions. Kenney, who wore bangs reminiscent of the author&#8217;s own, said that though the event recalled Rice&#8217;s death, &#8220;I don&#8217;t think she&#8217;s far away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"4\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>During Saturday\u2019s lengthy memorial presentation, actors recited select passages from Rice\u2019s novels, tenor David Michel sang \u201cBridge Over Troubled Water,\u201d a song Rice found especially comforting, and fellow horror authors described their devotion to the perennial bestseller, whom they considered a role model.<\/p>\n<p>The centerpiece of the presentation was an intimate documentary video that followed the life of the literary superstar who was born Howard Allen Frances O&#8217;Brien in 1941 in the Irish Channel. Footage shot during Saturday\u2019s event will be included in the documentary before it is released to the public.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-asset inline-image layout-horizontal  subscriber-hide
