The two laughed about their synchronized getting-ready process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt was very easy. It was very chill,\u201d Gerber said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe\u2019ve done it before, so we have it down,\u201d said Crawford.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cYeah, and she kept me on time and punctual, which I appreciate,\u201d Gerber went on. \u201cI would have been here 30 minutes later if it wasn\u2019t for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Even their hair was a point of coordination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cShe got the middle part tonight,\u201d Crawford said of their looks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe side part is your thing anyways,\u201d Gerber smiled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThat\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Their easy banter mirrored their sequined and embroidered looks \u2014 Gerber in molten red and Crawford in gold, echoing the evening\u2019s unofficial dress code: sparkle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cSparkling in Gucci tonight,\u201d said Crawford.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As the flashbulbs settled, talk turned to this year\u2019s honorees, artist Mary Corse and filmmaker Ryan Coogler \u2014 and to the Dodgers, who were playing their second consecutive championship series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Inside, guests watched the game discreetly between sips of Champagne. At 9:17 p.m., when the Dodgers officially won, the room erupted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cGo Dodgers,\u201d cheered Michael Govan, the museum\u2019s chief executive officer, when he took the stage just minutes later. \u201cAnd you thought art and film were good. Go Dodgers \u2014 how about that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Director Jon M. Chu, wearing a sharp Dolce &amp; Gabbana suit, was in high spirits for more than one reason. Chu, who directed the 2024 American musical fantasy film \u201cWicked,\u201d is gearing up for the release of its sequel, \u201cWicked: For Good,\u201d out Nov. 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe kids are at home, so I\u2019m good,\u201d he chuckled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI feel like I\u2019m in a Fellini movie tonight,\u201d he added, describing his Italian look. He credited stylist Liat Baruch. \u201cShe\u2019s awesome. She\u2019s amazing. She helps me find my confidence. She helps me show how I feel.\u201d And tonight? \u201cI\u2019m excited. I have my movie coming out, so I feel a sense of calm. I feel a sense of excitement. I\u2019m looking forward to celebrating art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It was his first LACMA <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/celebrity\/articles\/misty-copeland-takes-her-final-154527998.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:gala;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">gala<\/a>. \u201cCelebrating art and film together, it\u2019s really important we remind ourselves, both are in a dance together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That spirit of creative exchange echoed throughout the evening. When asked about her own most transformative art or film experience, Tessa Thompson \u2014 shimmering in silver Gucci \u2014 spoke thoughtfully about transformation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI went to see the new Kerry James Marshall show in London, and I\u2019m such a massive fan of Kerry James Marshall,\u201d she said. \u201cHe\u2019s probably one of my favorite working artists. Every time I see his work, I am so incredibly moved, not just by the size and the amount of imagination, but just what he\u2019s talking about, his treatment of Black identity and Black bodies in space. I\u2019m just continuously in awe of him and his craft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Thompson recently started working with stylist Karla Welch, she said of her gown. \u201cIt\u2019s been incredible. I love fashion. It\u2019s something that has really been a source of inspiration for me since I was a little girl. Also, when I work, fashion becomes so much a part of building character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Her eyes lit up recalling her recent 1953-set film \u201cHedda,\u201d with costume designer Lindsay Pugh bringing the period to life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhen you do period films like that, and you\u2019re making dresses, you really understand so much about construction,\u201d said Thompson. \u201cSometimes as an actress you\u2019re just plopping on a dress and taking it off. It\u2019s only when you get to visit the atelier, you\u2019re sat with the seamstress as they\u2019re working on something, that you understand the amount of work and vision that these garments demand. It\u2019s just a gift to get to work with these houses that are just extraordinary artisans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That same appreciation for craftsmanship extends to her red-carpet ritual. \u201cI always have a moment before I hit the carpet, I\u2019m like, \u2018OK\u2026\u2019 You want to do justice to the dress and to the garment, to all the wild imagination. I always think, when you\u2019re constructing a dress, you think of the woman hopefully that\u2019s going to inhabit it, so it\u2019s a joy to get to be that for an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Of the night\u2019s honorees, Thompson said both the artistic and personal connections made them meaningful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019m a Los Angeles native so Mary Corse is someone that I\u2019ve known about, and I just think the way she\u2019s been expansive with use of light, not just as subject but as material, is really inspiring. And I think she\u2019s someone that got her flowers sort of later in her career trajectory. It\u2019s just a nice thing to watch someone really getting their deserving recognition. And Ryan is a good friend, and I love him,\u201d she said, having worked with Coogler on his 2015 sports drama \u201cCreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For Angela Bassett, wearing a striking chartreuse Gucci gown \u2014 and who later took the stage to introduce Coogler \u2014 her most transformative experience in film or art was one that hit close to home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIn film, I have to say, maybe one I\u2019ve been in, \u2018What\u2019s Love [Got to Do With It?]\u2019<em>\u201d<\/em> she explained, referencing the 1993 biopic in which she portrayed Tina Turner, capturing the singer\u2019s rise to stardom and tumultuous relationship with Ike Turner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cNot only for me as an artist and the growth that I had to go through but also the impact on audiences and some of the stories that I would hear from those who saw the movie and it changed their lives,\u201d she went on. \u201cSome of them needed to make a change or take a detour, take the off-ramp, in their own personal relationships and that to me was deeply of the power that film could possess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For Coogler, who arrived with his wife Zinzi Evans, the evening carried a deeper sense of reflection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cFirst of all, I\u2019m very thankful and honestly, taken aback to be here tonight,\u201d he said of being recognized. \u201cIt makes me think about all the people that supported me in this process of getting in this industry and becoming a working filmmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">His career began with \u201cFruitvale Station,\u201d the 2013 drama about Oscar Grant\u2019s life and death, a film that cemented his work for blending art with activism. When asked how he views cinema as both an artistic medium and a tool for social change, he paused before answering with conviction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIn terms of cinema, it\u2019s such an incredible art form,\u201d he said. \u201cIt can be a populist art form, and it can be on the other end and be extremely artistic. It can be the whole spectrum. Whatever a creator wants it to be. If you tell a great story, you can do all of those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Both Coogler and Corse hail from California\u2019s Bay Area, two artists shaped by perspective while exploring storytelling in their own medium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When Corse took the podium, the pioneering Light and Space artist spoke on her decades-long relationship with LACMA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s such an honor working with this museum,\u201d she said. \u201cMy first show with LACMA was in 1970, and all the way until now, they\u2019re still supportive. This museum really supports artists with a new way of seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The room was a union of the arts, film and the city\u2019s cultural institutions. Among those in attendance were figures such as Cameron Shaw of the California African American Museum and Zo\u00eb Ryan of the Hammer Museum; artists including previous Art+Film honoree Mark Bradford and James Turrell, who introduced Corse; past film honorees like George Lucas and Baz Luhrmann, and local politicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Govan noted LACMA\u2019s next milestone: the opening of the David Geffen Galleries in April, which will showcase thousands of artworks, from the museum\u2019s permanent collection to new acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s a monumental gift to L.A.,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Govan announced that the gala had raised a record-breaking $6.5 million in support of the museum\u2019s film initiatives. He also took a moment to acknowledge Gucci\u2019s enduring partnership, noting that the brand\u2019s artistic director Demna \u2014 who attended the event along with Gucci president and CEO Francesca Bellettini \u2014 was building a home in L.A.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThank you for the support forever, really,\u201d Govan continued. \u201cIt\u2019s been 15 years. We\u2019re so deeply grateful for your generosity, your dedication in taking us on in those days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019m just so excited to have him at Gucci,\u201d said Eva Chow, the event\u2019s co-chair alongside Leonardo DiCaprio \u2014 also in attendance \u2014 reflecting on Demna\u2019s arrival at the house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Many attendees wore looks from Demna\u2019s debut La Famiglia collection, but like Gerber and Crawford, Chow was among those wearing a custom creation by the designer, a light, feathered lilac gown. \u201cHe\u2019s so talented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Guests mingled and dined at long, stretching tables lined with plum calla lilies and small golden lamps. The menu, crafted by chef David Shim of Cote, offered a refined nod to Korean flavors: crispy rice cakes, jidori heritage chicken with braised vegetables, ginkgo nuts, chestnuts and roasted kabocha squash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As dinner concluded, Cynthia Erivo took the microphone to invite everyone to continue the celebration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope you have had a beautiful night,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd now, to continue that beautiful night, I ask you to please join me outside for dessert and a very special performance by the wonderful, incredible Doja Cat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Just beyond the doors, trays of espresso martinis made with Don Julio 1942 tequila and bite-sized chocolates awaited guests as Sza stepped forward to introduce the Grammy-winning performer.
