She became a fan favorite thanks to her role on the NBC series <em>Smash<\/em>, and later made her Broadway debut in <em>Waitress<\/em>. She got engaged to Foster, a legendary record producer and composer, in 2018, and the couple was married the following year. But these days, the couple is juggling their busy music careers with raising their 4-year-old son, <strong>Rennie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In the sweet video posted to McPhee&#8217;s Instagram stories, McPhee and Rennie can be seen singing &#8220;Happy Birthday&#8221; to Foster, who is looking suave in a tux. McPhee is toting a birthday cake filled with candles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cHappy Birthday to my sweetheart @davidfoster. Back in 2023, the couple opened up about life on the road together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been great,&#8221; Foster told <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/katharine-mcphee-and-david-foster-discuss-the-perks-of-touring-together-and-new-holiday-album\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Entertainment Tonight;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Entertainment Tonight<\/em><\/a> about touring life. &#8220;It&#8217;s a bit of a shlep.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Being together has not been the shlep,&#8221; McPhee clarified. &#8220;Just the constant packing and unpacking. You wake up in a new city every day, and it&#8217;s just a grind. That&#8217;s the only part that sometimes wears on you. And you just want to be in your own bed. But when we&#8217;re onstage for those two hours, it&#8217;s the best part of the whole thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Parenting Their Little One<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As parents to Rennie, the couple occasionally has disagreements, particularly about discipline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I want to start disciplining [Rennie] and Kat&#8217;s not really down with that,&#8221; Foster told <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/katharine-mcphee-and-david-foster-disagree-about-disciplining-son-8405880\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:PEOPLE;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">PEOPLE<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;No, that&#8217;s not true,&#8221; McPhee replied. &#8220;I just want to discipline in my own way. There&#8217;s the more old-fashioned way of disciplining, which involves time-outs and things like that.
