New Orleans is only the 10th American city.<\/p>\n<p>Of those 10, only New Orleans and Kansas City earned UNESCO&#8217;s \u201cCreative City of Music\u201d designation.<\/p>\n<p>The application process commenced three years ago and was facilitated by New Orleans and Co., the local tourism industry\u2019s official destination marketing and sales organization.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"2\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>\u201cNot only does this designation fortify our seat at the global table, but it opens avenues for our culture bearers to connect with others in the industry in a way never before possible,\u201d Walt Leger, III, President &amp; CEO of New Orleans &amp; Company, said in a prepared statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis recognition for our music community is well-deserved and will help ensure New Orleans\u2019 rightful place as the most unique, remarkable and welcoming destination in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a news release, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said, \u201cGetting this designation is a tremendous achievement for the city of New Orleans\u2026. Becoming a UNESCO Creative City of Music opens doors to our culture bearers and will help us further amplify the positive social and economic impacts of New Orleans\u2019 music industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"3\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>The campaign <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/entertainment_life\/keith_spera\/new-orleans-gets-boost-in-bid-to-be-unesco-city-of-music\/article_8518f7f8-f60c-11ef-b41a-bb2943818d6e.html\" target=\"_blank\">got a big boost in February<\/a> when NO&amp;C officials received word that New Orleans is one of two cities, from two different creative fields, that the U.S. Mission to UNESCO selected to receive a letter of support from the State Department.<\/p>\n<p>That letter essentially confirmed New Orleans as one of the United States\u2019 official applicant cities to the UNESCO program.<\/p>\n<p>UNESCO launched its network program in 2004 as part of the organization\u2019s mission to facilitate global peace through cultural exchange and cooperation. It covers seven creative fields: design, film, music, crafts and folk art, literature, media arts and gastronomy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"4\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>The designated cities form a sort of mutual support system, with the hope being that they work together to promote culture and creativity.
