Akinola Davies Jr.<\/a>\u2019s debut feature \u201cMy Father\u2019s Shadow<\/a>\u201d has emerged as the film to beat at the upcoming 2025 British Independent Film Awards.<\/p>\n

The Cannes-bowing film, starring \u1e62\u1ecdp\u1eb9\u0301 D\u00ecr\u00eds\u00f9 and set against the backdrop of political arrest in 1993 Nigeria, leads the pack of titles going into this year\u2019s BIFA ceremony with 12 nominations, including best British independent film and director.<\/p>\n

Underling the emergence of new talent across the board of nominees, \u201cMy Father\u2019s Shadow<\/a>\u201d is followed by another directorial debut (and another film backed by Element Pictures<\/a> that premiered in Cannes\u2019 Un Certain Regard competition) in Harry Lighton<\/a>\u2019s \u201cPillion<\/a>.\u201d Starring Alexander Skarsgard<\/a> and Harry Melling<\/a>, the kinky queer romance earned 10 nominations, including best director and screenplay, plus nods for lead and supporting performance. Lighton was nominated in 2017 for his short \u201cWren Boys.\u201d<\/p>\n

Close behind and already a hit in U.K. cinemas is Kirk Jones\u2019 touching \u201cI Swear,\u201d about Tourette\u2019s campaigner John Davison<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
