Stephen Colbert<\/strong> has revealed his gut reaction to news that his late-night talk show was ending: \u201cI was surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cListen, every show\u2019s got to end at some time,\u201d Colbert, host of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert<\/em>, told GQ<\/em><\/a> on November 3. \u201cAnd I\u2019ve been on a bunch of shows that have ended sometimes by our lights and sometimes by the decision of other people. And that\u2019s just the nature of show business. You can\u2019t worry about that. You got to be a big boy about that. But I think we\u2019re the first number one show to ever get canceled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back in July, CBS announced<\/a> that The Late Show With Stephen Colbert<\/em>, which had aired since 2015, would end in May 2026, calling it a \u201cpurely financial decision.\u201d Three months later, Colbert won an Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series.<\/p>\n

Colbert, 61, told GQ<\/em> that he learned of his show\u2019s fate during a lengthy phone call with his manager.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018This is going to be the last season,\u2019\u201d said Colbert. \u201cSo I sat up and was like, \u2018Oh, okay. Well, that\u2019s interesting. I did not expect that.\u2019 And then we talked for hours. Because you don\u2019t have that moment very often.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the call, Colbert said he turned to his wife Evelyn McGee-Colbert for support.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then I went home and my wife, who was expecting me home in 15 minutes, and she said, \u2018That was two and a half hours.\u2019 She goes, \u201cWhat happened? Did you get canceled?\u2019\u201d Colbert told GQ. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018Yep.\u2019 So we sat down, she got me a drink, and we sat and talked about like, \u2018Okay, what do you want to do next?\u2019 That was it.\u201d<\/p>\n
