Tragic news for Grateful Dead fans everywhere: Donna Jean Godchaux<\/strong>, the beloved vocalist who sang with the band throughout the 1970s, has died. She was 78 years old.<\/p>\n Godchaux’s representative, Dennis McNally<\/strong>, confirmed her death in a statement shared with Rolling Stone<\/a>, noting that she died at a hospice facility in Nashville on Sunday, Nov. 2, following a “lengthy struggle with cancer.”<\/p>\n \u201cShe was a sweet and warmly beautiful spirit, and all those who knew her are united in loss. She’s with Keith now. Faretheewell,” one person wrote, with a second adding, “May the four winds blow you safely home. Say hi to Keith.”<\/p>\n “Donna forever,” declared someone else.<\/p>\n Born in Florence, Alabama, Godchaux worked with artists such as Cher<\/strong>, Dionne Warwick<\/strong>, and Elvis Presley<\/strong> during the ’60s, singing on such classic tunes as “Suspicious Minds” and “In the Ghetto.”<\/p>\n After leaving the South for San Francisco in 1970, Godchaux met Keith and saw the Grateful Dead play for the very first time. As the famous story goes, after she saw the band play at one local club, she introduced herself to Jerry Garcia<\/strong> and told him he should hire Keith.<\/p>\n \u201cI told Jerry that Keith needed to be in the band and I needed his home phone number, and I got his number!\u201d she later said. The couple joined the group not long after that.<\/p>\n Following their departure from the Dead, the pair started the Heart of Gold Band in 1980; sadly, the group’s run was cut short when Keith died in a car accident at the age of 32 only days after their first show. In 1981, she married bassist David MacKay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cI have many regrets, of course, like you do about decisions you make in life,\u201d she told Rolling Stone in 2014. \u201cYou can\u2019t make up for what isn\u2019t there anymore, but you can continue on a journey that takes you somewhere…If you keep looking back, you got nothing.
