What began in 1993 with David Letterman and turned into a nationally-beloved show and world-renowned program will run its final episode next April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a new interview, host Stephen Colbert reacted to Paramount and CBS&#8217; decision to cancel the show, despite it being well-received by audiences and critics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cListen, every show\u2019s got to end at some time,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/nov\/03\/stephen-colbert-late-show-cancellation-cbs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Colbert said in an interview with GQ;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Colbert said in an interview with GQ<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAnd I\u2019ve been on a bunch of shows that have ended sometimes by our lights and sometimes by the decision of other people. That\u2019s just the nature of show business. You can\u2019t worry about that. You got to be a big boy about that. But I think we\u2019re the first number one show to ever get cancelled.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Why Was &#8216;The Late Show&#8217; Canceled?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">CBS CEO George Cheeks said that the economics involved with advertising on late night didn&#8217;t justify the costs associated with running the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe challenge in late night is that the advertising marketplace is in significant secular decline,\u201d Cheeks noted. \u201cWe are huge fans of Colbert, we love the show. Unfortunately the economics made it a challenge for us to keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When &#8220;After Midnight&#8221; host Taylor Tomlinson declined to return for another season in the later time slot, Cheeks said the network elected to pull out of the late-night business altogether.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some argued that the show was canceled in response to Paramount&#8217;s settlement with Donald Trump, citing Colbert&#8217;s content in which he has been critical of the President.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">Colbert&#8217;s Direct Response to the Cancellation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI think one day, if not today, the people at CBS who have manipulated and handled this are going to be embarrassed.
