Julia Louis-Dreyfus went public with her breast cancer diagnosis in September 2017 via Instagram. Nearly one year later, she had successfully beaten the illness and returned to work on Veep. \u201cIt sounds kind of corny, but there\u2019s something about after [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Barrymore then asked Notaro, 54, about her own experience with breast cancer after she was diagnosed in 2012 and underwent surgery for a double mastectomy.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou had breast cancer, and you\u2019ve spoken about it humorously, eloquently, fiercely and brilliantly yourself,\u201d Barrymore said, before asking: \u201cHow did you calm yourself? How did you make peace with it?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt cracked me open, completely,\u201d Notaro emotionally revealed. \u201cI went from being somebody that held everything to myself \u2026 I was going to do it on my own and [said], \u2018I\u2019m OK.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEven when I came back from surgery \u2014 I had a double mastectomy \u2014 and my closest friends were settling in to stay with me, and I was like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m fine.\u2019 I couldn\u2019t even lift my arms,\u201d the comedian continued. \u201cThey were like, \u2018You\u2019re all set, Tig?\u2019 and I was like, \u2018Yep, I\u2019m all set. You guys can just head out now.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Notaro encouraged people in a similar position to lean on their loved ones.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I can\u2019t encourage people enough to do is get over any sort of feeling that you can\u2019t ask for help, or to act like you don\u2019t need anybody, like I was doing,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was the greatest gift you can give yourself and the people that love you, because people want to help, people want to do good. It changed my life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Barrymore, meanwhile, has been open about her health in the past, including substance abuse issues as a teenager.<\/p>\n
