A European company has acquired Emagine Entertainment, a movie theater chain based in Metro Detroit, in a $105 million deal. <\/p>\n
As part of the agreement, Kinepolis Group, which is based in Belgium, will add 14 theaters in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin to its portfolio, according to a news release. <\/p>\n
\u201cWith the acquisition of Emagine Entertainment, we are back on track with the execution of our expansion strategy since the pandemic,\u201d said Eddy Duquenne, CEO of Kinepolis Group. \u201cWe do this with a high-quality asset in a market where we have had positive experiences with our Kinepolis concepts. The location and size of the cinemas make them a valuable addition to the Group\u2019s portfolio, allowing us to expand our presence in the US market and strengthen our national structure. We are excited to welcome the new teams to the Kinepolis family.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Michigan locations included in this deal include the Emagine theaters in Saginaw, Hartland, Macomb, Canton, Novi, Saline, Birch Run, Rochester Hills and Royal Oak. <\/p>\n
Outside of Michigan, the acquired theaters are located in Geneva, Wisconsin, Noblesville and Portage, Indiana, and Batavia and Frankfort, Illinois.<\/p>\n
Some locations in Minnesota and Colorado, along with Emagine Woodhaven and The Riviera in Farmington Hills, are operated by third parties through brand licensing agreements.<\/p>\n

Emagine attracts about 6 million visitors annually and generates nearly $129 million in revenue. <\/p>\n
The $105 million deal is for 100% of Emagine\u2019s business, and Kinepolis could pay up to $15 million more depending on the U.S. box office growth for the rest of the year, according to the release.<\/p>\n
\u201cKinepolis will continue to operate Emagine theatres under the existing brand name and prioritizes the continuity for all Emagine customers, while carefully considering the needs of all employees and stakeholders,\u201d according to the release.<\/p>\n
The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The same company also previously acquired Landmark Theatres and MJR Theatres.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
