Meric Long just shared his debut solo record called Kablooey<\/i>, and fans of The Dodos \u2014 the indie-rock band he leads \u2014 should be thrilled because the album is everything you\u2019d expect from that project\u2019s leader: frenetic, playful and captivating indie rock.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not familiar with The Dodos, 2008\u2019s Visiter<\/i> was a highwater mark, with the guitar-and-drum duo garnering comparisons to Animal Collective, among others. However, life happened (as it does), and it\u2019s been almost five years since the band\u2019s last release.<\/p>\n

Long shared that his daughter\u2019s toy drum set was the thing that broke him out of his lull and served as the inspiration for him to write more music. He worked on the songs for Kablooey<\/i> between shifts as an in-house engineer at Tiny Telephone, John Vanderslice\u2019s recording studio in Oakland, Calif.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis album was really meant to be fun and not too purposeful,\u201d Long shared. \u201cI really just wanted to make something that was fun and allowed me to follow my more \u2018amped-up kid in a candy store\u2019 impulses.\u201d<\/p>\n
