LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014 Adam Sandler<\/a> will be the next recipient of AARP\u2019s Movies for Grownups<\/a> career achievement award, the group said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

And maybe this time, the actor will wait for his signal.<\/p>\n

When Sandler won the group’s best actor prize in 2020 for\u201cUncut Gems,\u201d he rushed to the stage too fast \u2014 before host Conan O\u2019Brien had time to sing his praises. O\u2019Brien made comic hay of the moment, sending the sheepish actor back to his seat with instructions to await “a signal.”<\/p>\n

From his \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d<\/a> roots to beloved comedies like \u201cBilly Madison\u201d (1995) and the cult classic \u201cHappy Gilmore\u201d (1996) to dramas like \u201cPunch-Drunk Love\u201d (2002) and his high-energy turn in \u201cUncut Gems\u201d (2019), Sandler, 59, has displayed an ever-growing range.<\/p>\n

This summer he reprised \u201cHappy Gilmore\u201d on Netflix<\/a> and in November will appear alongside George Clooney in Noah Baumbach\u2019s \u201cJay Kelly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winner of the 2023 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Sandler \u201cis one of Hollywood\u2019s most enduring and ever-evolving stars, whose talents resonate across generations,\u201d AARP said in a statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Myechia Minter-Jordan, the group’s CEO, called the actor \u201ca Hollywood legend whose remarkable career has set a new standard for comedic storytelling, captivating audiences across generations.<\/p>\n

“Adam\u2019s enduring success, his ability to reinvent himself, inspire laughter, and move us through dramatic performances is a testament to the power of creativity at every age,\u201d Minter-Jordan said.<\/p>\n

AARP launched the Movies for Grownups initiative<\/a> in 2002 to advocate for audiences over 50, fight ageism in Hollywood and promote movies \u201cfor grownups, by grownups.\u201d<\/p>\n

Actor Alan Cumming will host the ceremony in Beverly Hills on Jan. 10, to be broadcast by \u201cGreat Performances\u201d on PBS in February.<\/p>\n
