Some rake in more than $1 billion. The media also dutifully says when Starbucks shuts down its outposts or when the Apple Vision Pro flopped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I seem to recall my sports section colleagues writing that the Toronto Blue Jays recently lost a rather important baseball game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But all of a sudden in the entertainment world, plain facts are personal and irredeemably offensive. Coddling snowflakes from the truth even extends to basic showbiz receipts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Social media users are miffed that press outlets are reporting the box office failures of movies like Jennifer Lopez\u2019s \u201cKiss of the Spider Woman.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWho cares about what a movie made or makes?,\u201d wrote one shaken X user. \u201cOne of the most useless statistics of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI literally don\u2019t care whether a movie makes money or not,\u201d added another dolt. \u201cDoes it go into your pockets? No. It got made, shut up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And most hilariously, a certifiable genius said, \u201cThe obsession with the box office is killing movies and creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes, of course! Accurate reporting of grosses is the biggest problem facing the film industry today \u2014 not the ubiquity of streaming services, lackluster and poorly made products or plummeting audience interest. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cThe Smashing Machine,\u201d starring Dwayne \u201cThe Rock\u201d Johnson, was a notable under-performer in 2025. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scroll through X and you\u2019ll find thousands of similarly dumb posts assailing the perceived over-focus on what flicks earn versus what they cost to make.<\/p>\n<p>The reality is that if there are more box-office-related headlines lately it\u2019s because there are so many hyped-up films taking a tumble.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a fan of any of them, great.<\/p>\n<p>Get mad at your fellow consumers for not buying tickets.<\/p>\n<p>But you <em>should<\/em> care about how well they fared at the cash register, because it affects what your favorite artists who made them do next and the studios\u2019 perception of their genres. Enthusiasm for musicals, for example, tends to ebb and flow with hits and misses.<\/p>\n<p>Recall the old Hollywood phrase \u201cbox office poison\u201d about actors who could no longer guarantee a crowd. Nothing new.<\/p>\n<p>Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet has not led three December wide releases in as many years because he\u2019s <em>not<\/em> a huge draw.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, who stars in \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d this December, has been a rare box-office bright spot the last several years. <span class=\"credit\">x\/RealChalamet<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Filmmakers, it seems, are more clear-eyed than film buffs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Who cares about what a movie made or makes?
