It&#8217;s nowhere, but it outcharts everyone on YouTube,\u201d producer-artist <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Adam Lenox<\/span> aka <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Zouj<\/span> tells <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">OkayAfrica<\/span>. \u201c<span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Bilel Tachini<\/span> will put out a tune on a random Tuesday and make more streams than <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Drake<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Zouj came across a song by Algerian singer <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Cheba Warda<\/span> on TikTok, which felt simultaneously familiar and completely new. <\/p>\n<p><!-- placeholder(#1) --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew it was some kind of ra\u00ef, I understood it was Algerian as well, but I couldn&#8217;t pinpoint what it was. Ra\u00ef translates to \u201copinion,\u201d because it\u2019s an art form of the working classes that allowed them, especially women, to directly address socio-political issues, injustice, and taboo topics like love and lust.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Born out of anti-colonial sentiment under the French occupation, the genre grew and evolved. At times, it took a backseat under conservative governments or during national crises, but it\u2019s always been beloved amongst the majority of Algerians and eventually expanded to integrate new international sounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the past two decades, ra\u00ef has inspired artists to play with new sub-genres and fusions, such as\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/the-best-north-african-songs-right-now\/240882\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Ra\u00ef\u2019n\u2019B<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.okayafrica.com\/interview-soolking-the-algerian-star-fusing-ra-and-hip-hop\/154081\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">rap ra\u00ef<\/a>, or way-way. When Zouj came across the latter, he knew he wanted to learn more.<\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"a95e2e8d-52d3-46ba-b27d-3f1a5bd63f8a\" id=\"markup_1416582\" class=\"markupbox column small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rita L&#039;Oujdia x Zouj - 2choufat\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T__BmfMjAa0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A seasoned musician, Zouj has found critical acclaim with his mixtapes <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Tagat<\/span>, <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Metal<\/span>, and <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">ONLY RISKS<\/span>. He is known for his unconventional production style, or in his words, \u201cI\u2019m a good guy to call up if you want to do some really weird shit.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adult Swim featured Zouj\u2019s work on <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Off the Air<\/span> and <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Toonami<\/span>, and he has toured Europe and the UK while making waves in Germany\u2019s rap scene, where he has yielded chart-topping success. In North Africa, Zouj has worked with the likes of <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Nour<\/span> and <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Lella Fadda<\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, his new way-way-inspired mixtape <span data-lab-italic=\"italic\" class=\"italic m-italic\">Sabahu Al Kheir Men Zouj<\/span> wasn\u2019t created with the intention to make a record; it simply came out of the inspiration Zouj felt when he first heard way-way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat first caught my attention was how chaotic it was,\u201d he remembers. \u201cThe lead synthesizer is very particular. It comes from this one grey box that\u2019s been around since the 2000s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just sounds like a weird ghost, you know?\u201d he continues, trying to find the right words to describe his fascination with the sound. \u201cIt synthesizes actual instruments, like the rababa, which is the go-to instrument to do a way-way song. [With this synthesizer] it sounds nothing like the rababa, but somehow it does.\u201d He chuckles. \u201cIt\u2019s very esoteric.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"27874f4b-d649-4436-b63f-5d0a54995f96\" class=\"column youtube small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"content \" style=\"\">\n<div>\n<p>\n                    <iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/Lqoyd7ZugrQ\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Traveling in Morocco with his mother and grandmother, he stopped by his friend Naiires in Oujda and showed a group of musicians his first attempts at making way-way. \u201cThey were very surprised. They were like, \u2018how did you even find that?\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cNow there\u2019s a revival, but in 2022, way-way was very local and still dormant in the diaspora.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Next, he found himself at the villa of Moroccan ra\u00ef singer <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Cheba Mamia<\/span>, showing her his first attempts, too. \u201cShe was like \u2018yo this is trash, you should learn from my guys,\u2019\u201d he laughs. You have all this expensive equipment and then this one ugly, plasticky machine,\u201d he says. \u201cTheir approach to recording and arranging music is radically different to anything in Western pop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working mostly in Europe, Zouj was used to the approach of reduction and minimalism, arranging a few, well-curated sounds. Way-way, on the other hand, is \u201ca lot of stuff at once. It\u2019s very punk in a way,\u201d he says. Layers and percussion loops are thrown over each other with the use of only a few drum loops that one has to get creative with.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s also a spontaneity which is like \u2018record it, cool, it\u2019s done, put it online,\u2019\u201d he says. That\u2019s what he did with \u201cMa Cherie.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t know if this song is sarcastic or what\u2019s going on there,\u201d he laughs. \u201cI just really had so much fun doing it that not having it in the world as one piece for me to show my children would be sad. This is a document.\u201d<\/p>\n<div data-element-guid=\"76056a7c-3bb3-4a55-a4a9-4eeac2b27ae1\" class=\"column youtube small-12 large-12 small-abs-12 large-abs-12\">\n<div class=\"content \" style=\"\">\n<div>\n<p>\n                    <iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/Mi-X2XZy0gs\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n                <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The mixtape features tracks that stay true to the genre, like \u201c2choufat\u201d with <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Rita L\u2019Oujdia<\/span>, as well as experimentation with \u201ccrazy takes,\u201d such as \u201cWaah Rani Lachit\u201d with <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Pakkun<\/span> or the rage rap beat that became \u201cHasni 93\u201d with <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Losez<\/span>, <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">LA\u00ef<\/span>, and <span data-lab-font_weight=\"font-weight-bold\" class=\"font-weight-bold m-font-weight-bold\">Syqlone<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Cheba Mamia approves. \u201cShe said, \u2018Wow, you really made something with the boys, you really learned the thing,\u2019\u201d says Zouj with a smile. \u201cThere\u2019s not much gatekeeping.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the son of Moroccans from France, Zouj is a guest in the culture that is ra\u00ef, not at all part of the social movement behind the genre. \u201cThis is some hipster record made in Berlin,\u201d he clarifies.
