The \u201cProg Meets Raga,\u201d the performance brought together two seemingly distant worlds, Hindustani classical and progressive rock, into a seamless conversation of sound, emotion and imagination. \u201cThe Mumbai performance felt like two musical universes meeting in real time,\u201d says Chatterjee. \u201cHindustani classical improvisation has its own spiritual grammar, while Steven\u2019s world is intensely cinematic and psychological. The thrill was in letting the raga breathe inside his progressive framework\u2014not just playing solos, but responding to mood, texture and visuals.\u201d For the sitarist, this was not just a fusion experiment but a moment of artistic discovery. \u201cIt was about being fully present and letting the sitar speak a new language without losing its roots,\u201d he adds. The collaboration and the challenge<\/span>The collaboration took shape while Chatterjee was on tour in the United States. \u201cSteven\u2019s team reached out while I was performing there, and I later learned he had seen my work with Jordan Rudess,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI was excited, but also aware that his music demands a different kind of imagination.\u201d Chatterjee recorded his parts in Houston, expecting Wilson to use only a small portion. \u201cBut he told me to keep everything, that trust was special,\u201d he says. For the live performance, he went wireless and reconfigured his setup to blend smoothly with Wilson\u2019s large ensemble. \u201cIt was a challenge, but incredibly rewarding, thanks to his team and my students who helped me prepare.\u201d Shared depths across genres<\/span>Despite the contrasting genres, both musicians share a deep emotional and philosophical approach to sound. \u201cAt the heart of both Hindustani classical music and Steven Wilson\u2019s work is an emotional and meditative depth,\u201d Chatterjee explains. \u201cWe both see music as introspection and storytelling, not just performance.\u201d The experience has reinforced Chatterjee\u2019s belief that Indian classical traditions can thrive in any musical landscape. \u201cRagas can exist in rock, ambient or cinematic environments without losing their soul,\u201d he says. \u201cThis has inspired me to think even more visually and atmospherically in my own compositions.\u201d Looking ahead<\/span>The Mumbai concert may just be the beginning of a longer journey. \u201cThis experience has opened beautiful possibilities,\u201d Chatterjee says. \u201cI\u2019d love to explore something more expansive with Steven, perhaps orchestral, ambient, or even a space-themed concept piece.\u201d With Prog Meets Raga, Chatterjee and Wilson proved that when two distinct sound worlds meet in trust and openness, the result is not just fusion, it\u2019s evolution. \u201cWhen two sound worlds trust each other,\u201d he reflects, \u201cthe creative horizon becomes limitless.\u201d <\/div>\n
