There\u2019s no denying that \u201cStairway to Heaven\u201d has major Hobbit vibes, but Robert Plant\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> Led Zeppelin bandmates never realized that J.R.R. Tolkien had inspired some of his song lyrics.<\/p>\n \u201cTolkien opened the door to all that sort of dark age meanderer of history,\u201d Plant, 77, said during his Tuesday, November 4, appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert<\/a>.<\/p>\n RELATED: Legendary Rock Star, 76, Says He \u2018Loathed\u2019 One of His Band\u2019s Most Iconic Songs<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n When Stephen Colbert<\/strong> pointed out that there are \u201csome Tolkien in lyrics of Zep songs\u201d and Plant agreed, Colbert wondered if Jimmy Page<\/strong>, John Bonham<\/a> and John Paul Jones<\/strong> ever \u201cpicked up\u201d on the references.<\/p>\n \u201cIt didn\u2019t exist at the time,\u201d Plant explained. \u201cTolkien had his moment, but I guess The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings had subsided.\u201d<\/p>\n Both Plant and Tolkien grew up in an area of England known as the Midlands. Tolkien spent much of his childhood in Birmingham, especially in the areas of Sarehole (now Hall Green) and Edgbaston, while Plant was raised in nearby Halesowen and Kidderminster, also within the West Midlands.<\/p>\n The legendary rocker added that Tolkien\u2019s work \u201cspoke to him\u201d because of their similar upbringings.<\/p>\n \u201c[Tolkien\u2019s work] spoke to me because the points of reference were very close to where I live, and very close to where my parents unwittingly used to take me through this landscape where you began, just like you can here from another culture that\u2019s still around, you can read what the landscape gave you from the old times before there were highways and stuff like that,\u201d Plant continued.<\/p>\n RELATED: The Hobbits Are Back Together \u2014 and Their Big News Has Fans Cheering<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n He went on to explain that Tolkien understood the unique cultural undercurrent of the region, a part of Britain shaped more by ancient Welsh and British roots than by English identity.
