Brendan Fraser<\/a> and Rachel Weisz<\/a> may be reprising their roles in a new “The Mummy<\/a>” film.<\/p>\n

The actors, who starred in the late 1990s-2000s iteration of the hit Universal Pictures franchise, are in talks to return for a new film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of the filmmaking collective Radio Silence, according to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> and Deadline<\/a>.<\/p>\n

USA TODAY has reached out to Universal Pictures for comment.<\/p>\n

Fraser and Weisz played Rick and Evelyn O’Connell, respectively, in 1999’s “The Mummy” and 2001’s “The Mummy Returns.” Fraser starred in 2008’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” opposite Maria Bello, who replaced Weisz as Evelyn.<\/p>\n

This will be the first “The Mummy” film since the critically and commercially panned<\/a> 2017 film starring Tom Cruise<\/a>, and “The Scorpion King” 2018 spinoff film “Book of Souls,” which went direct to video.<\/p>\n

Radio Silence has directed the horror films “Ready or Not,” “Scream,” “Scream VI” and 2024’s “Abigail.”<\/p>\n

Fraser found blockbuster fame with “The Mummy” franchise \u2013 which dates back to Hollywood’s Golden Age \u2013 in a turn-of-the-millennium iteration following 1920s treasure hunter Rick O’Connell (Fraser) and librarian Evelyn “Evy” Carnahan (Weisz) as they save the world from an ancient Egyptian priest, Imhotep, revived from the dead. In the 2001 sequel, Rick and Evy are married with an 8-year-old son, who accidentally triggers a curse that resurrects the same priest. The 2008 film sees Rick and Evy (Bello) fight a different mummy, the Dragon Emperor, played by Jet Li<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2002’s prequel spinoff “The Scorpion King” is credited with giving Dwayne Johnson<\/a> his first lead film role. The subsequent films in the spinoff were all direct-to-video, with lesser-known names helming the series.<\/p>\n

There is no word on what other actors may join the film.<\/p>\n
