\n business Candy Kittens and former TV celebrity, said at
\n the\u00a0Guernsey
\n Private Wealth Forum 2025<\/a> in London this autumn.
\n<\/p>\n
\n His views were echoed at the London event by Deborah Meaden
\n (pictured right),\u00a0investor\u00a0on\u00a0the business
\n programme Dragon\u2019s Den\u00a0for almost 20 years. She is also
\n author of the bestselling books\u00a0Why Money Matters,
\n a guide for six to nine-year-olds\u00a0and Talks
\n Money\u00a0a money guide for 11 to 16-year-olds. \u201cIf I don\u2019t
\n fail, I am not trying,\u201d she said. \u201cMy first business failed,\u201d she
\n continued. \u201cI followed my ex-boyfriend to Italy when I was 19 but
\n ran out of money.\u201d She set up a glass and ceramics export agency,
\n which sold products to UK retailers like Harvey Nichols, but the
\n company failed after 18 months. \u201cI didn\u2019t have much money at that
\n time so it was hard for me to challenge it,\u201d she added.\u00a0
\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cMy next business came out of the clothing store Stefanel. I saw
\n it and wanted to be a franchisee and was one of the first,\u201d she
\n continued. She sold out two years later to her partner for
\n \u00a310,000 ($13,200). \u00a0
\n<\/p>\n
\n Meaden went on to build up Weststar\u00a0Holidays\u00a0a family
\n holiday park operator based in Devon, which sold for \u00a383 million.
\n \u201cI was sad about selling it but it was the right time to do it.
\n We were within a week of a crash which could have halved
\n our\u00a0value,\u201d she said.\u00a0
\n<\/p>\n
\n Laing highlighted how the TV world made him become a master of
\n improvising which helps in his business. Being on TV also helped
\n him to become self-aware. \u201cAs a founder, you have to be
\n self-aware and know what you are bad at,\u201d he said.\u00a0
\n<\/p>\n
\n His views were echoed by co-host Meaden at the event. \u201cFounders
\n of businesses try to do everything. You have to know what you are
\n good and bad at and what the business needs to succeed,\u201d she
\n said. \u201cStarting a business is like having a small child. In the
\n startup phase, it\u2019s full of fun and creative people. I am about
\n to go into the 21st series of Dragons Den. I love business. It\u2019s
\n a very energising thing,\u201d she said.\u00a0
\n<\/p>\n
\n Meaden also focuses her time on fair and ethical business
\n practices, as well as being a representative for many wildlife
\n charities, including the WWF and the Marine Conservation Society.
\n \u201cMy aim is to make sure my money is well spent and\u00a0helps
\n support the changes for the better in the world that I want to
\n see,\u201d she said.
\n<\/p>\n
\n Wealth management experts also explored at the event how the
\n industry is evolving to meet the needs of a new generation of
\n entrepreneur. Emerging sectors such as technology, sport, social
\n media and entertainment are driving demand for more tailored and
\n innovative solutions. “The thing that needs to be solved is
\n actually an issue of communication more so than products and
\n approach.\u00a0We have a huge amount of expertise and value to
\n provide \u2013\u00a0but it requires thinking about how we package it,
\n how we communicate it. The world is changing, but the core
\n principles of growing, preserving, and passing on wealth
\n haven\u2019t,”\u00a0Alexander Joshi, head of behavioural finance at
\n Barclays
\n Private Bank<\/a>, said.
\n<\/p>\n
\n The younger generation \u2013 and women in particular \u2013 stand to
\n benefit from this approach. Alice Russell, portfolio manager at
\n Cazenove
\n Capital<\/a>, said women are projected to hold 60 per cent of
\n wealth in the UK by the end of this year, emphasising that
\n fostering a sense of curiosity and confidence will be essential
\n in empowering these demographics to shape their own investment
\n journeys.
\n<\/p>\n
\n Helen McGhee, partner at Joseph
\n Hage Aaronson & Bremen<\/a>, also underlined\u00a0Guernsey\u2019s
\n appeal as a jurisdiction. She noted that this reputation is
\n underpinned by the island\u2019s stability, expertise and pragmatic
\n regulation.\u00a0\u201cWhat we try to do as a regulator is calibrate
\n the regulatory framework to the investors\u2019 needs and
\n requirements.
\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cWe\u2019re opening up, making it easier, reducing some of the
\n regulatory themes associated and modifying some of the regulatory
\n requirements, because we\u2019re very conscious of the target
\n market,”\u00a0Gillian Browning, deputy director general for the
\n Guernsey Financial Services Commission, added.
\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cWe believe these kinds of advancements to be a vital aspect of
\n preserving wealth for the future, empowering the next generation
\n to take a vested interest,” chief executive of Guernsey Finance<\/a>,
\n Rupert Pleasant, said.\u00a0\u201cGuernsey\u2019s trust and fiduciary
\n expertise and talent for innovation offer the ideal environment
\n through which to manage wealth and investments.\u201d
