Prior to\u00a0<\/span>Seinfeld<\/i><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Curb Your Enthusiasm<\/i> <\/span><\/a>and that\u00a0<\/span>legally-dubious crypto ad<\/span><\/a>, Larry David worked as a writer for\u00a0Saturday Night Live<\/i>. But, as is the case\u00a0<\/span>with so many\u00a0SNL<\/i> employees<\/span><\/a>, the experience wasn\u2019t a great one.<\/span><\/p>\n David lasted for just one season, and only managed to get a single sketch on the air. \u201cGoing Up\u201d was about an architect insisting that their new building should include a built-in stool for elevator operators to rest on between riders (a joke that was later recycled as a George storyline in\u00a0Seinfeld<\/i>\u2019s \u201cThe Maestro\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n The biggest thing to come out of David\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>SNL<\/i><\/span><\/a> tenure is arguably the now-legendary anecdote about how he once furiously quit the show, immediately regretted losing the money, and sheepishly returned to work. This, too, was later used\u00a0<\/span>in a\u00a0Seinfeld<\/i> episode.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n Seeing as how\u00a0Curb\u00a0<\/i>turned Larry into one of TV\u2019s most famous comedic performers, and a two-time\u00a0SNL<\/i> host, it may seem somewhat odd that he never actually acted on the show back in the \u201880s. But as publicist Danny Deraney recently pointed out on social media, David\u00a0did<\/i> perform on\u00a0SNL<\/i> back in 1984, albeit in a minor, audio-only capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n In November of \u201884,\u00a0<\/span>This is Spinal Tap<\/i> <\/span><\/a>star and future\u00a0SNL\u00a0<\/i>cast member Michael McKean\u00a0<\/span>hosted the show<\/span><\/a>. During his monologue, McKean tells the audience that he can do more than just comedy, announcing that he would like to \u201cbreak the ice\u201d by performing an \u201c18th century acapella Scottish dirge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n But not long after launching into his melancholy solo, an unseen heckler (played by David) interrupts, bellowing \u201cYo Lenny!\u201d in reference to McKean\u2019s\u00a0Laverne & Shirley\u00a0<\/i>character. \u201cHow\u2019s your short friend Squiggy? Hey, where\u2019s Squiggy, Lenny?!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n McKean has no choice but to stop singing and address the audience member. \u201cIf I don\u2019t deserve your respect, at least I deserve your attention!\u201d he barks, pointing out that he \u201creceived marvelous reviews\u201d for his work in\u00a0Spinal Tap<\/i> and performed at the 1969 Eugene O\u2019Neill Playwright\u2019s Foundation Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhat do I have to do to get your respect sir? Do you want me to do Hamlet? I\u2019ve done Hamlet!\u201d he declares. \u201cAnd, frankly, I think my Hamlet would be wasted on you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n David seemingly quiets down. But then, moments after McKean resumes his song, the heckler yells, \u201cHey Hamlet, where\u2019s Squiggy?!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n While this was the only real example of David acting on\u00a0SNL<\/i> during his time there, he did also briefly appear as a silent judge in the unfortunate \u201cRun, Throw & Catch Like a Girl Olympics\u201d sketch starring host Howard Cosell.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n
