\n\tLaura Karpman<\/a> is the third composer to score Captain America<\/em> for Marvel<\/a>. Before her, Henry Jackman took over for Alan Silvestri in The Winter Soldier<\/em>, Civil War<\/em> and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier<\/em>. This year\u2019s Captain America: Brave New World<\/a><\/em> also marks he first solo outing with the shield for Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), but Karpman paid homage to her predecessors.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe could sit here for 20 years talking about Alan Silvestri\u2019s iconic theme,\u201d Karpman said at Deadline\u2019s Sound & Screen: Film event. \u201cI challenge you all to find my little quote to it. It\u2019s there. Of course, Henry Jackman did the second iteration of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tKarpman hinted that the Silvestri quote comes in her \u201cBrave New World\u201d theme, Sam\u2019s new theme. She also wrote themes for the film\u2019s conspiracy, Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) and President Ross (Harrison Ford).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat of course has to become the Red Hulk,\u201d she said of Ford\u2019s character. \u201cYou get one president and it winds up being another. I don\u2019t know if we\u2019ve seen that anywhere. It\u2019s just such fiction. Hidden agendas, conspiracies, people enriching themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe composer credits Nia DaCosta for bringing her into the Marvel fold. DaCosta recommended Karpman for the animated series What If<\/em>, which Karpman calls \u201cbasically Marvel college because you have to know everything about the MCU and about all the music in the MCU in order to do it and turn it upside down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDaCosta hired her for The Marvels<\/em>, which Karpman scored simultaneously with the Disney<\/a>+ series Ms. Marvel<\/em>. Recently, she also scored Marvel\u2019s Zombies<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor Brave New World<\/em>, Karpman drew on the \u201cmid-century modernism\u201d of classic political thrillers.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is a combination of fugue and second-line percussions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n\tThose percussions included a drumline from New Orleans.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAll the beautiful snare work in the foreground with the percussion, that was all worked out with second line because of course Sam is from New Orleans,\u201d Karpman said. \u201cI wanted that to be in the DNA of the music even if it\u2019s not explicitly obvious.\u201d<\/p>\n
