Sydney Sweeney\u2019s<\/a> attempts to downplay her controversial American Eagle jeans ad earned her a sharp rebuke from fellow White Lotus<\/i> star Aimee Lou Wood.<\/p>\n

Wood, 31, weighed in on the issue after British celebrity photographer Misan Harriman shared a clip of Sweeney\u2019s \u201cMan of the Year\u201d interview for GQ<\/i><\/a>, in which the actress brushed off<\/a> the backlash to her jeans ad.<\/p>\n

The campaign, which launched in July with the slogan \u201cSydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,\u201d featured a short film playing on the words \u201cjeans\u201d and \u201cgenes.\u201d Critics accused the ad<\/a> of echoing eugenicist language about \u201cgood genes\u201d and genetic superiority, which was amplified further when it became a MAGA talking point<\/a> and was publicly praised by Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Harriman wrote on Instagram<\/a>, alongside a video of Sweeney talking about the ad, \u201cPresuming that you are not a white supremacist, at least say how horrified you were by how this campaign was amplified and celebrated by unrepentant racists who believe in eugenics.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt least recognise the harm your jeans campaign has caused black folk,\u201d he added. \u201cThe undertone of the campaign is that your genetics are superior to others – the play on words is clear as day and racists LOVED it!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, presuming you didn\u2019t know when you shot it, you certainly do now, and it matters. This ain\u2019t it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Harriman\u2019s post quickly garnered thousands of likes and comments, including one from Wood, who responded to the clip by signalling her disgust with a single green, nauseated-face emoji.<\/p>\n

The simple response, however, was met with immediate support from fans, who interpreted it as a rebuke of Sweeney\u2019s non-apology and flooded the comments with comments thanking the British-born actress for speaking up.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a real one, Aimee Lou Wood!\u201d one commenter wrote, while others responded with fire emojis and wrote \u201cClock it sis!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAny decent person would have been horrified at white supremacists, nazis, and fascists co-opting their likeness and works for their cause,\u201d another user wrote. \u201cHer smug indifference tells you all you need to know about the kind of person she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweeney downplayed the controversy when asked about the backlash to the American Eagle ad, simply telling GQ,<\/i> \u201cI did a jean ad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, the reaction was definitely a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I\u2019m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress claimed not to have seen much of the backlash due to her busy work schedule while filming Euphoria<\/i>, but said it was \u201csurreal\u201d to see Donald Trump jump to her defense after he learned she was a registered Republican.<\/p>\n

The next day, he followed up the thought with a much longer rant on Truth Social, in which the president wrote, \u201cSydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the \u2018HOTTEST\u2019 ad out there., It\u2019s for American Eagle, and the jeans are \u2018flying off the shelves.\u2019 Go get \u2018em Sydney!\u201d<\/p>\n

Vice President JD Vance also weighed in on the American Eagle campaign, writing on X, \u201cMy political advice to the Democrats is to continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually thought that one of the lessons they might take is \u2018we\u2019re going to be less crazy,\u2019\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd the lesson they have apparently taken is we\u2019re going to attack people as Nazis for thinking Sydney Sweeney is beautiful. Great strategy, guys!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
