If you don\u2019t recognize him, you\u2019d be remiss to not make his self-titled show the reason you know him now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Vince Staples Show\u00a0<\/i>logline sells the second season as an Odyssean voyage: \u201cIn the wake of a tragic death, Vince embarks on a wild journey in search of inner peace. However, his path is littered with reminders of his haunted past.\u201d\u00a0 With all six episodes of the second season out on Netflix on November 6, right now is the perfect time to dive in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first 30 seconds of episode one gives the viewers two very important pieces of information: the second season will be about grief, and it will be funny. Staples learns his uncle has died. How, he asks? Cancer, his mother replies. \u201cI thought he was a gemini,\u201d Staples deadpans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Often compared to\u00a0<\/span>Atlanta\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0Dave<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>(possibly because all three shows were helmed by rappers, possibly because all three shows blend the lines of comedy and drama),\u00a0The Vince Staples Show\u00a0<\/i>also calls to mind plenty of other television.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the second season especially, there\u2019s a dreamscape texture to the show that makes me think of Julio Torres\u2019\u00a0Los Espookys\u00a0<\/i>and David Lynch\u2019s\u00a0Twin Peaks.\u00a0<\/i>There\u2019s even some action sequences in the second season that call to mind pulpier fare like\u00a0Bullet Train\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0John Wick.\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0Netflix considers the show falls under the mastheads of \u201cTV Dramas,\u201d \u201cHip-Hop,\u201d and \u201cTV Comedies,\u201d\u00a0 but it clearly lives in a more expansive space than any single genre on the streamer\u2019s platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amid a scrumptious color-grading, fight scenes, and emotionally moving meditations on grief, there\u2019s always razor sharp comedy. The timing and writing brings to mind\u00a0Curb Your Enthusiasm<\/i> and\u00a0The Chappelle Show,<\/i> but the show still stands firmly on its own two legs, drawing from Staples\u2019 own life and contentions with fame. With each of the season\u2019s six episodes averaging about 25 minutes, you won’t miss the points it’s making.<\/span><\/p>\n
