As the fiftieth anniversary of the restoration of Spain\u2019s
\nmonarchy approaches, it\u2019s the future queen who is taking a starring
\nrole in commemorations.<\/p>\n

With just days to go until the country marks five decades since
\nroyal power was restored, a new set of stamps has been released and
\nit\u2019s Princess Leonor, the heir to the throne, who is front and
\ncentre.<\/p>\n

The Spanish post office, Correos, has released two new stamps
\nand Leonor, 20, is shown in close up on one of them. The other
\nfeatures her father, King Felipe VI.<\/p>\n

As it released the stamps, Correos<\/a> said the new stamps
\ncommemorate \u201dthe monarchical institution\u201d and \u201dthe Crown\u2019s
\ncommitment to the history and future of Spain\u201d.<\/p>\n

The two stamps, each costing six euros, are also being sold on a
\nspecial commemorative cover which features a pencil drawing of the
\nfront of the Congress of Deputies, chosen because it is a \u201dsymbol
\nof democracy and the Constitution\u201d.<\/p>\n

The 50th anniversary of the restoration of the Spanish monarchy
\ncomes on November 20 2025. The first king to reign in this modern
\nmonarchy was Juan Carlos I who was chosen as successor by the
\nfascist dictator, Franco. Juan Carlos was expected to continue with
\nFranco\u2019s regime but instead initiated a series of radical chances
\nwhich led to the establishment of a constitution and democracy.<\/p>\n

However, a series of scandals led to his popularity plummeting
\nand he abdicated in 2014 in favour of his son, Felipe VI.<\/p>\n

There is no stamp showing King Juan Carlos in this special set.
\nInstead, Correos says it is focusing on the \u201dmembers of the Borbon
\nand Ortiz family, current representatives of the Crown\u201d.<\/p>\n

King Juan Carlos now lives in exile in Abu Dhabi. He has
\nreturned to Spain in recent days just as his memoirs,
\nReconciliation, are published in France.<\/p>\n
