\u201cI feel like in the state of the world, we want a warm hug,\u201d Abigail Spencer<\/a> says on a fall day in upstate New York. TV Insider is on the set of the new Fox comedy, Best Medicine<\/a><\/em>, and it\u2019s easy to see why it\u00a0will give us just that.<\/p>\n The series starring Josh Charles<\/a> follows his character, Dr. Martin Best, a brilliant surgeon who suddenly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child with his Aunt Sarah (Annie Potts<\/a>). The townspeople include Spencer\u2019s charming schoolteacher Louisa, Josh Segarra<\/a>\u2018s lovable sheriff Mark, and Cree as Martin\u2019s inept but endearing assistant Elaine. It\u2019s an adaptation of the British series\u00a0Doc Martin<\/a><\/em>. (Martin Clunes<\/a> will be guest starring as Martin\u2019s father<\/a>.)<\/p>\n Spencer hadn\u2019t known it was an adaptation when she first read it. \u201cI was really drawn to Liz [Tuccillo]\u2019s writing, and then Rodney [Ferrell] and Ben Silverman<\/a>, who brought\u00a0The Office<\/em><\/a> over,\u201d she tells us before revealing that it also brought her and Charles together onscreen after another project they\u2019d been attached to together last year fell through.<\/p>\n \u201cThe other show was two people who were married and fall in love. And I was like, man, people just really want Josh and I to fall in love on camera together,\u201d Spencer laughs. \u201cSo, I wanted to work with him, and then I read it, and I was just totally and utterly delighted by it. I love the \u201890s rom-com. And so if there\u2019s a way to bring a \u201890s romantic comedy and also the British humor, like of Love Actually<\/a><\/em> and Notting Hill<\/a><\/em>, to a series in America\u2026 That\u2019s what I was longing for.\u201d<\/p>\n She also notes it\u2019s something that the whole family can watch together. It\u2019s \u201cquirky and comedic, but also heartfelt,\u201d she shares. It\u2019s also something she hasn\u2019t done before, \u201cbleeding this sweet spot of tone.\u00a0I had been looking for the romantic heroine of a show like this.\u201d Spencer likens Louisa to \u201cSandra Bullock<\/a> in Practical Magic<\/a><\/em> or Julia Roberts<\/a> and Meg Ryan<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Martin and Louisa do get off on the wrong foot, like you\u2019d expect from love interests. \u201cYou can\u2019t\u00a0have people that you\u2019re rooting for not love to hate and hate to love each other,\u201d points out Spencer. \u201cAnd I think the misinterpretation is part of the fun of the dynamic and the will they\/won\u2019t they. What I also think they\u2019ve established is all the other characters are so strong. You could go home with anyone. But at the core of it is this kind of unrequited love becoming requited.\u201d<\/p>\n She will start to see a different side of him, however, that will change her mind about him, like \u201chow brilliant he is at what he does and also how unique he is to the town,\u201d the star says. \u201cI think there\u2019s an intellectual component, but also she starts to see who he really is and that they\u2019re so different. There is a little bit of an opposite attract and that he\u2019s the outsider coming in and she grew up in this town.\u201d<\/p>\n
