\u201cThe Daily Show\u201d host Jon Stewart hailed Democratic election wins this week<\/a> as \u201camazing.\u201d But in almost his next breath on the latest episode of \u201cThe Weekly Show\u201d podcast, the comedian then stingingly asked: \u201cHow will they squander it?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cHow will they piss this away?\u201d Stewart asked his guests, MSNBC<\/a> anchor Chris Hayes<\/a> and former Obama campaign manager David Plouffe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Hayes suggested \u201cthermostatic public opinion\u201d when \u201cone party has the White House, the other party tends to do better in the off-year elections,\u201d and the unpopularity of President Donald Trump<\/a> were two factors that contributed to this week\u2019s victories, but are things that Democrats<\/a> ultimately have no real say over.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThe third layer is candidate recruitment, messaging, campaigns,\u201d Hayes said, which is where Democrats can either \u201cscrew it up\u201d or \u201cbuild on it\u201d and \u201cI think they did a lot that was right\u201d in the 2025 elections, he argued.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Stewart, though, later declared: \u201cI think the Democrats are still a mess.
