Away from the bright lights and applause, they have found purpose not in their next movie, concert, or match, but in spirituality. In this feature, Weekend Trust showcases Nigerian celebrities who have found and redefined their purpose.<\/strong><\/p>\n Across Nollywood, music, and sports, several household names have shared their experiences finding their way to God, not as an escape from fame, but as a new expression of meaning and service. For them, this newfoundfaith is not a retirement plan but a redefinition of their purpose as human beings on earth.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n SPONSOR AD<\/span><\/p>\n The movie converts<\/strong><\/p>\n Eucharia Anunobi was one of Nollywood\u2019s most glamorous stars. Popular for her bold roles in Glamour Girls and Abuja Connection, she lived in the spotlight. In 2011, the actress announced that she had been ordained an evangelist under the Fresh Oil Ministry. Using her social media accounts, the actress is now popular for sharing about forgiveness, transformation, and grace. She is also known to counsel youths and travels at random to spread the gospel of salvation.<\/span><\/p>\n Although not as active as in the 90s and early 2000s, the actress has said in several interviews that her walk with will not deter her from acting. She once said, \u201cSome people think that when you become a minister of the gospel, you are not supposed to have a career. However, being a minister does not stop you from working. Since I started acting, I have never taken a break.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The actress also noted that she didn\u2019t just want to be remembered as the Nollywood fashionista but rather as someone who lived for God.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI have moved from the things that don\u2019t matter to the things that matter more, which is doing the work of my Father who created me and made me an instant star when I least expected it in my life.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI would never want to be remembered as someone who graced all the front pages of all the newspapers and news magazines in the world and did not contribute to the leading of people towards heaven. Of truth, you will agree with me that the job that will be rewarded by God Himself is that of soul-winning. So, why waste my fame, money, life, face, time, and speaking ability to do the things that will never be rewarded?\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n Veteran actress Patience Ozokwor, called \u2018Mama G\u2019, who was famed for her evil stepmother portrayals, shocked many when she publicly declared herself born again after a 30-day fast and an intense spiritual encounter. She acknowledged in interviews that even though she hadn\u2019t been told to stop performing, she could no longer resist the call: \u201cI am here to win souls for Jesus.\u201d I am here to carry out my father\u2019s work.\u00a0 Since then, she has avoided the glamour of movie premieres in favour of preaching in churches and choosing roles in films that reflect her religious beliefs.<\/span><\/p>\n Zack Orji is another Nollywood veteran who found his calling with God. Known for his calm and easygoing screen presence, Orji, now an ordained evangelist by Bishop Lawrence Osagie of Power Line Bible Church, travels as a preacher, speaking at churches in Nigeria and abroad. He had preaching engagements in various churches, such as Shepherd House Assembly in Makurdi, Lafia, and Abuja.<\/span><\/p>\n The actor once said he believes that both acting and winning souls for Chris are a calling. \u201cEach of them is a calling. We use our work as celebrities to also minister to people.\u201d He spoke.<\/span><\/p>\n Liz Benson is another leading actress of the 1990s who found her purpose in faith. She left acting at the height of her fame and later returned, not to the film industry, but to the pulpit. Alongside her husband, Bishop Great Ameye, she now runs a ministry in Delta State focused on family and spiritual growth.<\/span><\/p>\n And then there is Jimmy Odukoya, one of Nollywood\u2019s rising stars who also serves as a pastor. Jimmy, who is the son of the late Pastor Taiwo and Bimbo Odukoya, was appointed Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church after his father\u2019s passing. Known as a Gen Z pastor because of his dreadlocks, tattoos, and magnetic presence, Jimmy portrays a perfect mix of modernity with deep faith.<\/span><\/p>\n Pat Attah, once considered one of the leading men of early-2000s Nollywood, is another who found faith away from fame. After relocating to Germany, Pat announced that he had become a born-again Christian and devoted his life to ministry and gospel music.<\/span><\/p>\n It\u2019s worth mentioning that these actors haven\u2019t abandoned their position in the spotlight; instead, they\u2019ve simply redirected it.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Music meets ministry<\/strong><\/p>\n In the music industry, where reinvention is common, some stars have taken that transformation to a spiritual level.<\/span><\/p>\n Formerly well-known for his smooth R&B singles, like Yes\/No and Strong Ting, Banky W (Bankole Wellington) is currently a pastor at Lagos\u2019 Waterbrook Church. He teaches about self-discovery, grace, and purpose in addition to music and politics. The head of the EME label has talked a lot about his spiritual journey over the years, explaining how he met God after experiencing a hole in his life despite his success in the outside world. He also credits his faith with supporting him during personal challenges, such as a fight with cancer. Wellington also attributes his marriage to Nollywood actress Adesua Etomi to God, claiming that God brought her to him throughout his spiritual journey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Kedike crooner and 2010 Project Fame winner, Chidinma Ekile, also shocked fans when she left mainstream Afropop in 2021 to become a gospel artist. Signing with EeZee Conceptz, she announced that she had found her true calling in Christ. \u201cI\u2019ve had enough of running,\u201d she said in her debut gospel announcement video. Her songs now centre on worship and purpose, a far cry from the love-themed hits that once defined her in the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n For these musicians, faith didn\u2019t silence their creativity; rather, it gave it new depth. Their platforms remain, but the message has changed.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n From field to faith<\/strong><\/p>\n For some Nigerian footballers, faith became their second calling after the final whistle.<\/span><\/p>\n Taribo West, once famous for his colourful hairstyles and fierce tackles, now leads Shelter in the Storm Miracle Ministries. The former Inter Milan and Super Eagles defender is known for his passionate preaching and outspoken spirituality<\/span><\/p>\n Peterside Idah, another former Super Eagles player, is now a pastor based in South Africa. Having worked as a football analyst after retirement, Idah says ministry helped him find peace beyond the noise of competition.<\/span><\/p>\n Alloy Agu was a prominent player for Nigeria from 1988 to 1994, helping them win the Africa Cup of Nations and being a member of their first World Cup roster the same year.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0In a 2021 interview, Agu disclosed that his early retirement from football was due to a vow he made with God.\u00a0 At the moment, he serves as a pastor at Christ Divine Church of God.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Faith in Kannywood<\/strong><\/p>\n In Kannywood, faith has always been an inseparable part of its storytelling. Many Hausa-language films already promote moral lessons rooted in Islamic and cultural values, so formal \u201cconversions\u201d are less common.<\/span><\/p>\n Still, prominent actors like Ali Nuhu and Rahama Sadau often speak about the balance between fame and faith, navigating an industry where cultural expectations are high. For many northern stars, spirituality isn\u2019t a new path; it\u2019s the compass that has guided their work from the start.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Fans\u2019 Speak<\/strong><\/p>\n Over time, fans have watched their favourite entertainers make surprising turns from fame to faith. So far, the reactions have been mixed some people are inspired, others curious, and a few unsure about this newfoundpath.<\/span><\/p>\n Speaking to Weekend Trust, Ada Queen, who was a big fan of Mama G while growing up, said, \u201cPatience Ozokwor\u2019s transformation still leaves me speechless. I grew up scared of her wicked roles, she defined fear in Nollywood. But now, watching her preach about forgiveness and grace? It\u2019s like seeing your childhood villain become your prayer warrior. It reminds me that change isn\u2019t just possible but powerful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n An entrepreneur, Mide Olaitan, said, \u201cI respect Banky W differently now. The man went from love songs to life lessons, and he\u2019s still so intentional. You can tell this isn\u2019t a phase; it\u2019s growth. Every time he talks about faith and purpose, it feels like he\u2019s speaking to our generation that\u2019s constantly chasing meaning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Queen Tessy, a fan of Eucharia, added, \u201cListening to Eucharia now, she doesn\u2019t preach like someone reading a script but like someone who\u2019s lived the story. Her sermons carry that same emotional fire she brought to acting, but now it\u2019s coming from a healed place. I listen to her and see strength, not celebrity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Another big Nollywood lover, Blessing, said, \u201cSome people think these celebs turned pastors are just trying to stay relevant. But if you\u2019ve followed their journeys, you\u2019ll see something genuine. They\u2019re using their platforms for something bigger.
