Jennifer Lawrence<\/strong><\/a> is opening up about life as a working mom and how motherhood made her realize how little society is set up to support parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I had my first child, I felt completely connected to my baby,\u201d Lawrence, 35, told W Magazine<\/a> in an interview published on Friday, November 7. \u201cBut I also realized the world wasn\u2019t designed around that relationship. Suddenly, you\u2019re like, Wait, how am I supposed to go back to work? Get in a car and drive away? Get on an airplane and fly away from my baby? Like, what are you talking about? Everything looks different after that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawrence stars in the new movie Die My Love alongside former Twilight actor Robert Pattison<\/strong><\/a>. The drama follows a woman who experiences a severe form of postpartum depression called postpartum psychosis, which can include severe and even life-threatening symptoms including paranoia, confusion, obsessive thoughts, hallucinations and attempts to harm either yourself or your baby.<\/p>\n

Realizing just how little U.S. society is built to support new parents \u2014 the U.S. is the only industrialized world that does not mandate paid family leave, and to date does not offer universal childcare, universal free lunch, and pays mothers less than it does fathers \u2014 gave Lawrence a feeling of empathy towards her character, Grace.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tJennifer Lawrence got real about motherhood and her struggles with postpartum depression. \u201cHaving kids is sacrificial. It\u2019s gratifying and it\u2019s amazing and rewarding, but it\u2019s not not sacrificial,\u201d the actress said in the Saturday, November 1, episode of \u201cThe Interview\u201d podcast from The New York Times. \u201cI\u2019d never had to say no to something before [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cShe says it in the movie: \u2018There\u2019s nothing wrong with me and my baby; it\u2019s the world that\u2019s f***ed up,\u201d Lawrence told the publication in her Friday interview. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t know, maybe with a little more time, in retrospect, I\u2019ll be able to tell the difference. I\u2019m still not sure what was acting and what was just me being a mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawrence is aware of the serious \u2014 and sometimes difficult to sit through \u2014 nature of her latest film. In fact, she is worried that fans of The Hunger Games or Twilight might be drawn to the movie for all the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy biggest fear is that people are expecting fanfic because it\u2019s me and Rob,\u201d Lawrence explained. \u201cHuge mistake to go into this movie with that expectation. Everybody, pump your brakes and maybe watch a Lynne Ramsay movie before going in.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to relying on her own lived experience as a mother \u2014 Lawrence shares two children with her husband, Cooke Maroney<\/strong> \u2014 Lawrence also found inspiration for her character Grace in what many would consider to be an unlikely source: the TLC series Baylen Out Loud.<\/p>\n
