Chubby Checker<\/strong><\/a> is heading to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame<\/a>, but it wasn\u2019t always this way. More than 20 years ago, he famously protested the very museum that will now celebrate him.<\/p>\n \u201cBack in the day,\u201d Chubby Checker told Billboard<\/em><\/a>, \u201cI said, \u2018I don\u2019t want to be in the Rock Hall when I\u2019m dead. I want to smell my flowers when I\u2019m here.\u2019 And I\u2019m smelling my flowers\u2026a little late in the game.\u201d<\/p>\n The 84-year-old, born Ernest Evans<\/strong> in South Carolina, has been eligible for induction since the first Rock Hall class in 1986. On Saturday, November 8 in Los Angeles, the artist who turned \u201cThe Twist\u201d and other classic dance hits into worldwide sensations will finally be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s another milestone \u2014 and the beat goes on,\u201d Checker said, reflecting on the honor. Although this tribute has been a long time coming, Checker has had a complicated relationship with the famed organization.<\/p>\n In 2002, Checker famously protested outside the Rock Hall museum in Cleveland. However, he said it wasn\u2019t about recognition, it was about making sure his music was heard.<\/p>\n \u201cI wanted people to know that Chubby\u2019s music was not being played, that\u2019s all it was,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe protest was, \u2018Please play Chubby\u2019s music.\u2019 The best thing for any artist is to get his music played, and my music wasn\u2019t getting played and I was a little upset about it.\u201d<\/p>\n He explained, \u201cYou can walk into the supermarket and hear (sings) \u2018Bennie and the Jets\u2019\u2026but not \u2018The Twist,\u2019 and you look around the supermarket and every company\u2019s got some kind of twist product, you know? I did it very nicely. I didn\u2019t try to cause any problems. I never protested anything in my life except that.\u201d<\/p>\n Checker\u2019s path to rock stardom began at age four, after seeing a performance by country star Ernest Tubb<\/strong>. Later, he and his family moved to South Philadelphia, where he sang doo-wop as a young boy.<\/p>\n A produce market boss gave him the nickname \u201cChubby,\u201d and American Bandstand<\/em> host Dick Clark<\/strong> suggested he take the surname \u201cChecker\u201d as a tribute to Fats Domino<\/strong>.<\/p>\n He started his recording career with a 1959 single called \u201cThe Class\u201d, emulating popular artists like Domino and Elvis Presley<\/strong>. But it was \u201cThe Twist,\u201d written by Hank Ballard<\/strong>, that catapulted him to fame.<\/p>\n By adding dance moves to the song, Checker made it a cultural phenomenon, boasting it to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960 and again in 1962. It remained the only single to achieve this feat until Mariah Carey\u2019<\/strong>s \u201cAll I Want For Christmas Is You\u201d decades later.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2018The Twist\u2019 gave us what we have on the dance floor \u2014 and is still giving us that,\u201d said Checker. Beyond \u201cThe Twist,\u201d Checker\u2019s influence includes hits like \u201cPony Time,\u201d \u201cThe Fly,\u201d \u201cLimbo Rock,\u201d \u201cLet\u2019s Twist Again\u201d and a revival of \u201cThe Hucklebuck.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cChubby Checker never left the dance floor,\u201d he explained. \u201cI used to call myself the wheel that rock rolls on, because anyone after Chubby Checker who had a song that you could dance to, they were in my world, that I brought to the dance floor. Dancing to the beat is what we brought, and it\u2019s still there \u2014 no matter what it is. It\u2019s called the boogie, and the boogie is still going on. Someone once said, \u2018Chubby, you want to do a disco song?\u2019 \u2018Why? I did that already.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Checker\u2019s career includes 32 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, seven of which reached the top 10.
