It tells the story of her journey to faith: She grew up in an atheist intellectual Bay Area family, became addicted to alcohol and drugs, lost her father to cancer, and eventually found her way to Christianity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some of the funniest bits are about her raising her son. When she\u2019s ashamed of yelling at him: \u201cIt\u2019s like bitch-slapping E.T.\u201d When another mother in her son\u2019s class makes a passive-aggressive comment: \u201cI thought such awful thoughts that I cannot even say them out loud because they would make Jesus want to drink gin straight out of the cat dish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>The last thing that made me cry: <\/b>Also from <i>Traveling Mercies<\/i>, in which Lamott describes God as a kind of adoptive parent who will take in even the most difficult children. \u201cThe mystery of God\u2019s love as I understand it is that God loves the man who was being mean to his dog just as much as he loves babies; God loves Susan Smith, who drowned her two sons, as much as he loves Desmond Tutu,\u201d she writes. \u201cSo of course he loves old ordinary me, even or especially at my most scared and petty and mean and obsessive. Loves me; <i>chooses <\/i>me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>A favorite story I\u2019ve read in <\/b><b><i>The Atlantic<\/i><\/b><b>: <\/b>I had to wipe away tears of laughter while reading Gary Shteyngart\u2019s \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2024\/05\/royal-caribbean-cruise-ship-icon-of-seas\/677838\/?utm_source=yahoo-news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Crying Myself to Sleep on the Biggest Cruise Ship Ever;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Crying Myself to Sleep on the Biggest Cruise Ship Ever<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>An actor I would watch in anything: <\/b>Anthony Hopkins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>An author I will read anything by: <\/b>Ann Patchett.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>A quiet song that I love, and a loud song that I love: <\/b>One of my favorite quiet songs is \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w2fQ5TOZ_Dg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Misty;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Misty<\/a>,\u201d as performed by its composer, the pianist Erroll Garner. Listening to it makes even just a walk around the block dreamy. (Bonus: If you explore more of Garner\u2019s work, you\u2019ll notice he hums and vocalizes along while he plays!) Every sonic variable is perfectly calibrated to yield the ideal amount of bubblegum pop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>A culture debate I recently had: <\/b>A friend and I debated whether the new Taylor Swift album, <i>The Life of a Showgirl<\/i>, is good. I\u2019m a longtime Swift fan, but even I thought it sounded like ChatGPT\u2019s version of a Taylor Swift album. And yet, \u201cThe Fate of Ophelia\u201d remains stuck in my head. I don\u2019t even like the song! Maybe this is what Swift meant when she <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/10\/03\/nx-s1-5560870\/life-of-a-showgirl-taylor-swift-takeaways\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:said;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">said<\/a> the album would contain \u201cmelodies that were so infectious that you\u2019re almost angry at it.\u201d [<b>Related:<\/b> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/culture\/2025\/10\/taylor-swift-the-life-of-a-showgirl-album-review\/684444\/?utm_source=yahoo-news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Taylor Swift\u2019s fairy tale is over.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Taylor Swift\u2019s fairy tale is over.<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>Something I recently revisited: <\/b>I recently wrapped up a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2025\/09\/fred-walecki-guitar-expert-westwood-music\/683558\/?utm_source=yahoo-news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:magazine feature;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">magazine feature<\/a> about my father\u2019s musical-instrument shop, which was a hub of the 1960s and \u201970s music scene in Los Angeles. Once the story went to press, I rewatched <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2025\/10\/spinal-tap-ii-movie\/683962\/?utm_source=yahoo-news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:This Is Spinal Tap;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><i>This Is Spinal Tap<\/i><\/a>, because nothing (lovingly) parodies rock music better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>The last museum or gallery show that I loved: <\/b>In general, I\u2019m less affected by visual art than I am by music. The exception may be the \u201cSargent and Paris\u201d exhibit at the Met earlier this year, which I saw four times. I especially love a painting of two young women on a rooftop in Italy; one appears to be dancing the tarantella, and the other is playing the tambourine. You can hear the music; you can feel the cool Capri air. Looking at the scene fills me with an emotion I haven\u2019t yet been able to identify, so I keep coming back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><b>My favorite way of wasting time on my phone: <\/b>I was actually wasting <i>so <\/i>much time on my phone (mostly on Instagram) that I had to remove every single fun app from it. But one of my favorite ways to waste time on my computer is Pinterest. It is, in my experience, a universally positive part of the internet. I use it as a tool to dream with\u2014usually about the southwestern-style home I hope to one day own, where I will have lizards and coyotes for neighbors.
