Suzannah Mirghani<\/a>\u2019s Sudanese drama \u201cCotton Queen<\/a>\u201d won the top prize Sunday at the Thessaloniki Film Festival, taking home the Golden Alexander for best feature film.<\/p>\n

Mirghani\u2019s arresting debut \u2014 the first-ever feature film shot by a female Sudanese director \u2014 wowed the festival jury, which included Match Factory head of sales \u03a4hania Dimitrakopoulou, U.S. cinematographer Frederick Elmes<\/a> (\u201cBlue Velvet<\/a>,\u201d \u201cWild at Heart<\/a>\u201d) and writer-director Elegance Bratton<\/a> (\u201cThe Inspection<\/a>\u201d), who said \u201cCotton Queen<\/a>\u201d \u201cblew us all away.\u201d<\/p>\n
