{"id":2144974,"date":"2025-11-09T19:18:04","date_gmt":"2025-11-09T19:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2144974"},"modified":"2025-11-09T19:18:04","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T19:18:04","slug":"una-department-of-entertainment-industry-named-for-music-legend-briggs-brothers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/una-department-of-entertainment-industry-named-for-music-legend-briggs-brothers\/","title":{"rendered":"UNA Department of Entertainment Industry named for music legend Briggs brothers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FLORENCE \u2013 The Department of Entertainment Industry at the University of North\u00a0 Alabama has been renamed to the David and John Briggs Family Department of Entertainment Industry. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The naming was made possible by a gift from Darren and Gabriel Briggs, the sons of session musician legend David Briggs, and David\u2019s brother, John Briggs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A native of Florence, David Briggs was only 14 when he played piano on his first recording <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">session at James Joiner\u2019s studio in downtown Florence. During the next five decades, he played <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on more than 10,000 recording sessions and contributed his unique and diverse sound to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">numerous No. 1 records and thousands of charted records in multiple genres. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harold Bradley, past President of the Nashville Chapter of the American Federation of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musicians (AFM), who oversaw David\u2019s retirement package at the time of his retirement said,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBased on our research, David Briggs is the most recorded musician in the history of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AFM.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As members of Rick Hall\u2019s FAME Studio\u2019s first rhythm section, known as the Muscle Shoals <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhythm Section, they recorded songs from the seminal hit of \u201cYou Better Move On\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1961 to a number of other hits until their departure to Nashville in December 1964<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This whirlwind of success led to the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section being the band <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">backing The Righteous Brothers and Tommy Roe at a significant date in Rock \u2019n\u2019 Roll<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">history \u2013 opening for the Beatles first show in the U.S. in Washington, D.C., on Feb. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11, 1964. David was an integral part of the vanguard that defined the Muscle Shoals sound.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After his move to Nashville, David continued to expand his creative talents and business skills <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nto a number of successful ventures, establishing Quadraphonic Studio in 1970 and Danor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Publishing Company with fellow Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section member Norbert Putnam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quadraphonic Studio became the premier top rock\/pop recording studio in Nashville, and Danor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Publishing Company generated a number of pop, rock and country hits. Artists recording at\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quad included Neil Young, Jimmy Buffett, Joan Baez, The Jacksons, and Bob Seger<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They sold the companies in 1980.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David opened House of David Studio in 1980 and, a few years later, opened Will N David <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Music, with legendary hit songwriter Will Jennings. The resulting success of both entities led to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more legendary pop, rock, and country music success. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few clients who recorded at House of David <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">included Joe Cocker, Neil Young, Roy Orbison, BB King, Maroon Five, Dan Fogelberg, Chris <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stapleton, Steve Earle, The Crusaders, among others. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will N David Music became a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant music publisher in a short period of time, winning BMI\u2019s Top Pop Music Publisher of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Year in 1988. A small sampling of hits from the catalogue includes Whitney Houston\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDidn\u2019t We Almost Have It All;\u201d Steve Winwood\u2019s hit singles, \u201cHigher Love,\u201d \u201cRoll with It,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBack in the High Life,\u201d and \u201cFiner Things;\u201d Eric Clapton\u2019s \u201cTears in Heaven;\u201d Ronnie <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milsap\u2019s \u201cWoman in Love;\u201d and Shenandoah\u2019s \u201cNext to You Next to Me.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond being the most recorded piano player with Elvis Presley, David recorded <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around the world with George Harrison, Leon Russell, Dolly Parton,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neil Young, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Linda Ronstadt, Johnny Cash, Dan Fogelberg, Joan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baez, Al Green, Dean Martin, Willie Nelson, Brenda Lee, the Pointer Sisters, JJ Cale, Bob <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seger, and others. He worked with more than 90 artists in the County Music <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Rock \u2019N\u2019 Roll halls of fame.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a historical perspective, David was a musical genius and businessman. He wore many hats including, musician, session leader, artist, arranger, producer, hit songwriter, studio owner, publisher, jingle writer, owner of a number of Music Row properties, producer of shows at the White House and on major television networks. The fascinating aspect to his\u00a0 talents was his ability to work with major artists in multiple genres including pop music, R&amp;B, country, jazz, classical, standards, and western.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1999, David was inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame; in 2019, he was inducted into<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Musician\u2019s Hall of Fame as a member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John was the vice president of membership for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASCAP). In this role, John demonstrated a wide range of creative, business, and leadership <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skills that led to his success as one of the industry\u2019s most valuable players. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just a few of the acts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John recruited to ASCAP from 1985 until 2010 included the Backstreet Boys, the Chicks, Kenny <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chesney, ZZ Top, Brad Paisley, Dobie Gray, Deana Carter, Shenandoah, Alan Jackson, The<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cranberries, Clint Black, Jessica Simpson, Little Texas, Brian McKnight, Kenny Chesney, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gloria Gaynor, and Garth Brooks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before working at ASCAP, John received his commercial music degree from UNA in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1983. After graduation, he was the studio manager of House of David Studio and Creative <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department at Screen Gems, Colgems, and EMI Music. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After his time at ASCAP, John worked <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with Estevez\/Sheen Productions in Los Angeles and was the executive producer of Jerry Lewis\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">theatrical version of \u201cThe Nutty Professor.\u201d John later moved into the financial arena, serving as<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Entertainment Industry Specialist at US Bank followed by serving as vice president of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entertainment and Pro Sports Division of Tower Community Bank.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dedicated arts supporter, John has been a member of music industry and civic-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oriented organizations. He has served on the boards of the Academy of Country Music, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better Business Bureau of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky, Nashville <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entertainment Association, Nashville Chamber of Commerce\u2019s Partnership<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2000, Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee, Alabama Music Hall of Fame, UNA\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President\u2019s Cabinet and College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering Advisory Council, Founding <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Board member of the ACM\u2019s Lifting Lives Foundation, and the BBB\u2019s Integrity Foundation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John is a graduate of Leadership Music and ASCAP\u2019s Leadership Program MOVE.
