Raglan James is still a mystery even to Justin Kirk<\/a>. The actor first donned those black, thick-rimmed glasses for Interview With the Vampire<\/em><\/a> Season 2, and Episode 4 of the Talamasca<\/em> spinoff gave him the chance to slip back into the uniform for \u201cthe slippierest fish\u201d you\u2019ll ever get a hold of, as Nicholas Denton<\/a> (Guy Anatole) described him to us at New York Comic Con<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I saw that clip,\u201d Kirk says with a laugh when that label is brought up in our Talamasca interview. Kirk reprised his role in the season\u2019s second Interview With the Vampire<\/em> crossover episode on Sunday, November 9, on AMC<\/a>. The first was with Eric Bogosian<\/a>\u2018s Daniel Molloy in the series premiere<\/a>. Neither episode is narratively connected to The Vampire Lestat<\/em><\/a> (premiering in 2026) or Mayfair Witches<\/em><\/a> (Season 3 filming now), but both characters had run-ins with Guy that make you question the trustworthiness of this secret order, a concept that already bleeds through the Immortal Universe. (Ask William Fichtner<\/a>\u2018s Jasper, and he\u2019ll say not to trust them at all \u2014 and as we learned in this episode, he has good reason for this bias.)<\/p>\n

Kirk has only had a few episodes to dig into Raglan so far, and the character \u2014 the titular figure of Anne Rice\u2019s Tale of the Body Thief<\/em> \u2014 is still in prequel mode. Until Body Thief<\/em> is adapted, all Kirk has for source material is whatever the writers give him and the fact that Raglan will one day be fired from the Talamasca. Interview With the Vampire<\/em> creator Rolin Jones<\/a> gave Kirk complete creative freedom with the role. The\u00a0Succession<\/em> alum can\u2019t remember exactly when Jones pitched the role, but he says it\u2019s possible that it was before Interview <\/em>Season 1 was released (memory is a monster).<\/p>\n

\u201cI then took a look at the book, and then I came to [Jones] with various, \u2018Hey, can I do this? What if I do this?\u2019 And he is like, \u2018Do you want to?\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Well, did you read the book?\u2019 He goes, \u2018It\u2019s been a year or so,\u2019\u201d Kirk recalls to TV Insider. \u201cIt\u2019s been very, I go there and we do it and I say, \u2018What do you think? I\u2019m just throwing sh*t at the wall.\u2019 And they say, \u2018Looks good to me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He recalls the first time he tried out Raglan\u2019s accent while filming\u00a0Interview\u00a0<\/em>Season 2: \u201cI think they were like, \u2018Well, that\u2019s weird, but we\u2019re totally into it.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Raglan reminds Kirk of Christopher Lloyd\u2019s Jim Ignatowski from Taxi<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we very first see Christopher Lloyd as Reverend Jim, it\u2019s a guest spot, and he\u2019s about halfway to what the character ends up being,\u201d Kirk explains. \u201cObviously, it was such a good appearance that they were like, you know what? We\u2019re going to have this guy back and make it a regular. And the next time you see him, he\u2019s dug deeper into the actual way he looks and sounds. That\u2019s kind of how I felt. You do it once, you\u2019re like, \u2018OK, I\u2019m getting there, but I\u2019m going to really get it right on the next time I show up.\u2019 And that\u2019s how I\u2019m starting. I\u2019m still aiming at getting it right, but doing Talamasca<\/em> felt like I had dug in a little bit more. Because that first time we did Season 2 in Prague, you\u2019re just feeling it out, and you\u2019ve flown across the world, and you\u2019re like, \u2018Well, I hope this kind of works. And there\u2019s Eric Bogosian. Let\u2019s see how it goes.’\u201d<\/p>\n
