The piece opened:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>According to a legend of the Chippewa tribe, the lake they once called Gitche Gumee &#8220;never gives up her dead.&#8221; Modern-day mariners of Lake Superior know the legend has some basis in fact: the largest and most treacherous of all the Great Lakes, Superior is also the coldest \u2014 deadly not only to man but also to the organisms that infest drowned bodies and bring them to the surface. During the gales of November \u2014 caused by the cold air of the Arctic meeting the lingering warm autumn weather \u2014 the lakes can become especially forbidding.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He lifted that imagery nearly verbatim for his opening lyric \u2014 transforming journalism into poetry. The <em>Newsweek<\/em> story also described how \u201cthe storm hit Lake Superior \u2026 by evening, the ship was rocking through 30-foot waves and fighting hurricane-force winds. Only 15 miles from the relative calm of Whitefish Bay \u2026 the Anderson\u2019s Capt. J.B. The church had been immortalized in his lyric as \u201cthe Maritime Sailor\u2019s Cathedral\u201d \u2014 and now it honors Lightfoot, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">His widow <strong>Kim Lightfoot<\/strong> told the AP, \u201cThe Edmund Fitzgerald was always present in Gordon\u2019s mind \u2026 Paintings, models and tributes adorned the walls \u2026 If Gordon were with us today, he would have been intent on helping keep the candle of memory lit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Half a century later, that candle \u2014 and that bell \u2014 still burn and ring each November.
