Jimmy Kimmel<\/strong><\/a> and his wife, Molly McNearney<\/strong>, are opening up about how his late show being suspended<\/a> impacted their entire family.<\/p>\n

During a recent appearance on the \u201cWe Can Do Hard Things\u201d<\/a> podcast, the couple looked back on the aftermath of ABC abruptly pulling Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/em><\/a> off the air in September amid backlash for Kimmel\u2019s comments about the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe go home, and our kids are there, and we realize they have no idea what\u2019s going on,\u201d said McNearney, co-head writer and executive producer on Kimmel\u2019s show. \u201cAnd we had to do that thing that parents do so well, which is just immediately put on a mask. [We] asked them, \u2018How was soccer today? What\u2019s the funniest thing you heard at school today?\u2019 We were just trying to make conversation with our children, but meanwhile, our phones are just [blowing up] the whole time in our pockets. And there\u2019s helicopters over our house and madness outside.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel, 57, and McNearney, 47, share daughter Jane, 11, and son Billy, 8. The comedian also has two adult children, Katherine and Kevin, from his first marriage to ex-wife Gina Maddy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Kimmel and McNearney realized the situation couldn\u2019t stay under wraps for long. \u201cOur daughter is in fifth grade, and kids talk,\u201d McNearney explained.<\/p>\n

The pair sat their little ones down on the couch before starting the conversation. \u201cAnd we realized in that moment that any other time we\u2019ve sat them down to talk about something, I guess it\u2019s been good, because Jimmy said, \u2018We wanna talk to you guys about something,\u2019 and Jane [got excited],\u201d McNearney said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

The news that followed, however, was hard to hear. After learning what had happened to the show, Jane \u201cimmediately burst into tears\u201d and told her parents, \u201cI\u2019ll sell my Labubus.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to McNearney, it was Billy who asked if President Donald Trump<\/strong> was involved. \u201cWe looked at each other and we didn\u2019t quite know how to answer that question,\u201d she recalled, with Kimmel admitting that he told his son yes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s certainly not an experience I had with my parents in Las Vegas,\u201d Kimmel teased while reflecting on the conversation.<\/p>\n

Kimmel went on to joke that Jane is convinced she\u2019ll inherit her father\u2019s show whenever he retires. \u201cWe\u2019ve never said this to her, we don\u2019t know where she got it,\u201d he continued. \u201cShe has three other siblings, two of them are actually adults and more qualified to take over if it was indeed a family business. \u2026 She felt that she\u2019d been somehow suspended. I\u2019d ruined it for her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tJimmy Kimmel Live! has been on the air since 2003, and Molly McNearney has been by host Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s side for almost the entire way. She joined the crew as a writer\u2019s assistant in 2004, but their relationship was slow to develop. Eventually, the coworkers became friends, then the friends became a couple. Today, their [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Overall, Kimmel and McNearney tried to reassure their kids that everything would be OK \u2014 even if they weren\u2019t convinced of that themselves. \u201cJimmy and I both believed that night the show was never coming back,\u201d McNearney confessed.<\/p>\n

ABC announced on September 17 that Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/em> would be \u201cpreempted indefinitely\u201d due to a controversial monologue the host delivered days prior. At the time, a source exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em><\/a> employees at the show were uncertain about its future, noting that \u201cno one [knew] what\u2019s really going on.\u201d<\/p>\n
