(He was “terrible” at it, he said, when filming began. He didn’t look at the camera enough; Frei looked at it too much.) His couch mates swooned. I love that show, said Taylor Swift; Gleeson’s performance is magnetic, noted Cillian Murphy. All were floored by his midwestern American accent.

Gleeson’s face registered brief surprise before cracking into a grin and laughing out loud. He seemed genuinely entertained and looked how he’d sounded when I told him how much the people I’d spoken with loved working with him. I, too, had pointed out the Ned accent and the specificity of the Ned vibe he’d taken on, one that seemed very different from his own. “I think that’s one of the things I like most about the actors I really love,” he said. “When you realize they’ve created somebody totally new and made it look as though there was no effort behind it.” He continued, “So thank you. That’s an incredibly nice thing to say, to say that I’m not like Ned.”

Listening to Gleeson talk, I get the sense that while accolades and recognition are important, the real beating heart of his career lies elsewhere.

Ten years ago, Gleeson starred in a revival of Enda Walsh’s unhinged black comedy The Walworth Farce, at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin, alongside his brother and father. The three were onstage together in front of 1,200 people every night for a month. Domhnall played a son who dressed as all the story’s each female roles, replete with multiple wig changes. “When we would get a laugh together,” he said, “the shock of it, hitting you like a wave when you’re in sync with two of the people you love most in the world, that was—I don’t know if entertaining is the right word, but in terms of feeling the buzz, that felt special.”

Photos from the play show the trio onstage, looking colorful and ridiculous.
