It wouldn\u2019t be Monday without somebody saying, \u201cSNL<\/i> stole my sketch!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n This week, it\u2019s the long-running BYUtv comedy show,\u00a0Studio C<\/i>, which aired a \u2018Beauty and MrBeast\u2019 sketch last Monday, November 3,\u00a0<\/span>according to a\u00a0LateNighter\u00a0<\/i>report<\/span><\/a>. \u201cI turned a hundred servants into common household items and trapped them in this castle in the French countryside!\u201d says MrBeast as a terrified clock and candlestick look on. \u201cThe only way they\u2019re going to get their human bodies back is if they make this lady (Belle) fall in love with me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n So it\u2019s no wonder that Mormon eyebrows raised when\u00a0Saturday Night Live<\/i> did its own \u2018Beauty and MrBeast\u2019 sketch only a few days later. \u201cI’m keeping her dad trapped in a dungeon for 30 days for a chance to win over $300,000,\u201d enthuses Ben Marshall\u2019s version of MrBeast. \u201cFor every pound he loses, I’ll give a Tesla to a random stranger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Studio C<\/i>, a clean-comedy sketch show produced in Utah, isn\u2019t some obscure Internet oddity unlikely ever to blip on\u00a0SNL\u00a0<\/i>writers\u2019 radar. Its YouTube channel has more than 2 billion views, and the show has featured guest spots from\u00a0SNL\u00a0<\/i>veterans like Will Forte and current cast member Kenan Thompson.<\/span><\/p>\n But was the MrBeast idea really stolen? The Studio C version only went up on its YouTube channel this afternoon \u2014 after\u00a0SNL\u00a0<\/i>aired \u2014 so it would have been challenging for 30 Rock writers to see. And like\u00a0<\/span>the minor kerfuffle around the \u201cChatGPTio<\/span><\/a>\u201d<\/span> sketch earlier this year<\/span><\/a>, the similarities end once you get past the basic premise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n You know who\u2019s not mad about the sketch? Jimmy Donaldson,<\/span> the Riyadh theme park mogul who also goes by MrBeast<\/span><\/a>. \u201cI didn\u2019t know they were gonna talk about me but the second it aired my phone blew up haha,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Donaldson told\u00a0Dexerto<\/i><\/span><\/a>. \u201cThought it was funny.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n One reason to give\u00a0SNL\u00a0<\/i>the benefit of the doubt: This is at least its fourth Disney\u00a0Beauty and the Beast\u00a0<\/i>parody over the past few years. Kristen Wiig and Gerard Butler did their own version in Season 35, with each character believing the other must be the hideous creature in need of transformation.<\/span><\/p>\n In the Willem Dafoe episode three years ago, Pete Davidson and Chloe Fineman played the titular characters, spying on Belle\u2019s dad via a magic mirror.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n And Abby Elliott was Belle in\u00a0The Real Housewives of Disney<\/i> in Season 37. \u201cThe Magic Kingdom is my playground \u2026 and I like to\u00a0play<\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n All of these Beauty and the Beast parodies mean no one at SNL <\/i>gets originality\u00a0points for this week’s version. As for the Studio C<\/i> sketch, SNL <\/i>writers can always claim parallel thinking. But given that both sketches aired during the same week, the coincidence is not a great look for Saturday Night Live<\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n
