BECKLEY \u2014 On Friday, Nov. 7, hundreds of guests shuffled through the lobby of Marquee Cinemas at the Beckley Galleria before waiting in line for their chance to meet and take photographs with three-time boxing hall-of-fame inductee Christy Martin.<\/p>\n
Martin, the titular character of the recently released biopic \u201cChristy,\u201d was born, raised and began boxing in West Virginia before becoming an internationally recognized pioneer of women\u2019s boxing.<\/p>\n
The new film from director David Michod is written by Mirrah Foulkes, who based the screenplay on Martin\u2019s true-life story, and stars Sydney Sweeney portraying Martin.<\/p>\n
Marquee Cinemas staff arranged a one-night-only meet-and-greet with Martin for attendees of the 7:15 p.m. movie premiere, which drew hundreds of movie and sport fans as well as family and friends.<\/p>\n
According to Martin, her story remained authentic throughout the film\u2019s production as the director, writer and actor all worked closely alongside her.<\/p>\n
\u201cI spent hours and hours on the phone with Mirrah Foulkes, the screenwriter,\u201d Martin said. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing in this movie that didn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
Martin said she wanted the feature film to avoid cliched tropes and tired narratives.<\/p>\n
\u201cI asked, \u2018\u201cPlease don\u2019t \u201cHollywood-ize\u201d my life,\u2019\u201d Martin said. \u201cThey told me, \u2018Christy, there\u2019s enough crazy stuff that\u2019s happened in your life that we don\u2019t have to!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Martin also praised Sweeney\u2019s performance. \u201cYou got sexy Sydney Sweeney and how is she going to get down and dirty and be Christy Martin?\u201d Martin said. \u201cBut she sure did. It\u2019s gonna be a great portrayal!\u201d<\/p>\n
The film\u2019s narrative positions Martin\u2019s career within a pivotal era for women\u2019s boxing when televised fights and high-profile matchups pulled the sport from novelty to legitimacy.<\/p>\n
Friends who knew her before the cameras said the crowd\u2019s size made sense.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s a rock star,\u201d childhood friend Renee Van Dolan said. \u201cShe\u2019s a legend here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Van Dolan remembers long bus rides to the school gyms growing up in Wyoming County with Martin. \u201cMy uncle coached her in basketball, and she was tenacious the whole time growing up,\u201d Van Dolan said. \u201cEverybody knew she was going to be a legend, going to do great things with her life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tom Van Dolan \u2014 who met Martin after the magazine covers \u2014 called her \u201cvery down to earth and very amiable\u201d and the same person he expected to find offstage as on.<\/p>\n
The premiere framed Martin\u2019s public work alongside the biography. She called the film\u2019s intended takeaway \u201cinspiration,\u201d describing herself as a coal miner\u2019s daughter and \u201cthe ultimate underdog\u201d who found a way to give back. Martin paired that with a plea for tolerance and acceptance \u201cof people\u2019s choices, whether it be their sexuality or religion.\u201d<\/p>\n
Martin\u2019s homecoming, the film\u2019s release and the fans\u2019 reception all pointed to a life that outgrew the ring without leaving it behind.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got up and back on my feet to try and help other people,\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
