But why is the Emmy Award-winning host returning now?<\/p>\n Tom Bergeron was fired because he criticized the casting of former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on the show in 2019.<\/p>\n He also clarified on Cheryl Burke\u2019s Sex, Lies and Spray Tans<\/em> podcast that he would object to any political figure on the show. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018Guys, this is\u00a0exactly\u00a0what we said we wouldn\u2019t do,\u2019\u201d the Emmy winner recalled. \u201cAnd I would have responded the same way if they had booked Hillary Clinton, whom I voted for. \u2018Don\u2019t go there. This is, you know, not the right time. Play to our strengths. Be the show that gives people a break from all this bulls\u2014.\u2019 So, I was furious.\u201d<\/p>\n In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/em>, the former host revealed how he really felt during the time. \u201cIt pissed me off. I\u2019ll be honest with you. I did not like the showrunner. He knew that. I didn\u2019t like being lied to, and he did that. So when he got fired, I think when Twitter was still a thing, I posted, \u2018Karma is a bitch.\u2019 So I couldn\u2019t be happier that the people who are running the show now are running the show. But to be honest, the 20th anniversary, in other people\u2019s hands, would not have lured me back.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat I get a kick out of is when every so often on social media, I\u2019ll see somebody, like, \u2018Well, if Tom hadn\u2019t brought politics into the show, he wouldn\u2019t have got fired,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n Tom Bergeron agreed to return as a guest judge to the 20th anniversary special<\/a> of Dancing With the Stars<\/em> airing on Nov. 11, 2025. He returned to the special because of staff changes.<\/p>\n \u201cIf the previous regime was still in charge of the show, I wouldn\u2019t go back,\u201d he says, explaining that executive producer Conrad Green\u2019s return was a major push in his return. Green had been the inaugural showrunner and left the show in Season 27. He later returned to the show for Season 31 and \u201cextended an olive branch\u201d to Bergeron.<\/p>\n As for whether he\u2019d return to host permanently, he told THR, \u201cI\u2019m done. They have a permanent host, and he\u2019s really good. I have no desire to host anymore. I\u2019m always open to being surprised, but it would not be that show, because they have great people doing it. But honestly, to go back as a guest judge, I\u2019m just thrilled about.
