Eddie Murphy<\/a> is recalling his 1988 Oscars speech, in which he called out the Academy for its lack of recognition of Black actors, and what Robin Williams<\/a> told him before he took the stage.<\/p>\n

In a new interview, Murphy<\/a> recalled presenting at the Oscars, where he presented the Best Picture category.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember being with Robin Williams backstage. I was like, \u2018I\u2019m gonna say this.\u2019 And he goes to me, like, \u2018But why go there?’\u201d Murphy told Entertainment Weekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cI was like, \u2018Oh, you don\u2019t think it\u2019s funny?\u2019 It was more, is it funny? Rather than it\u2019s controversial. I was trying to be funny and say a little something, but be funny too. Have a little edge to what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murphy noted that when he made the speech, he \u201cwasn\u2019t thinking of the ramifications of it,\u201d adding, \u201cI was just trying to…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
